Plovdiv is the Bulgarian host city of the eagerly anticipated CEV EuroVolley 2021 Women together with Belgrade (Serbia), Zadar (Croatia) and Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The multifunctional and iconic Kolodruma arena, whose construction finished in 2015 and cost over 50 million BGN, will provide the ideal stage for the top Volleyball players and teams in Europe to perform and shine.

The Municipality of Plovdiv does not hide its ambition to deliver the biggest sporting event in Bulgaria for 2021 and it will do anything necessary to ensure a perfect organisation.

The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation has chosen Plovdiv as their CEV EuroVolley 2021 Women host city for a number of reasons. Plovdiv was the starting point in the career of elite athletes such as soccer star Hristo Stoichkov and high jumper Stefka Kostadinova. Moreover, the team of Maritza is multiple national champions and regular participants of the elite CEV Champions League. Plovdiv is not only the oldest living city in Europe, but a popular tourist destination as well, with visitors enjoying the charming old town and the antique coliseum. Moreover, there is an international airport, which is another organisational advantage.

The Kolodruma will host the matches in Pool B, as well as four 8th and two quarterfinal matches of the flagship CEV event for women’s national teams.

“After Sofia, Varna and Ruse, which hosted major Volleyball championships in 2015 and 2018, now the time for Plovdiv has come,” states Lubomir Ganev, the President of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation. “Plovdiv has secured its place as the capital of the women’s Volleyball thanks to the success of Maritza. Many supporters here are eager to watch Volleyball at the highest level. The geographical location as well as the quick highway connection make Plovdiv convenient for the fans from other places and we are sure we will see a lot of them! We met a big desire for cooperation and joint work in the Municipality and we are much grateful for it! It is a key element in the organisation of such major sporting events. We are confident that together we will offer the best organisation and hospitality to all players, fans and officials who will come to Plovdiv!”

“EuroVolley attracts a lot of media interest and enjoys live broadcasting across the globe. Therefore, it is a great opportunity for the city of Plovdiv to advertise itself via sport. Plovdiv and Bulgaria will become even more recognisable as a tourist destination,” Ganev continues. “We all hope that until the summer of 2021 the pandemic situation will have improved, and that people will be able to travel freely and visit sporting events. We look forward to hosting Volleyball fans in Plovdiv in order to turn the days of EuroVolley 2021 into a huge celebration for the sport and for the city as well!”
