Match Report

Poland uses a mix of players to thwart a strong effort from Estonia

Article

Poland confirmed its reputation of reigning world champion by starting today with four of its star players on the bench: Léon, Kubiak, Nowakowski, and Zatorski. All watched the EC opening match of their squad in Rotterdam Ahoy from the sidelines. In spite of that and the Estonian service pressure, Poland had the better play in the opening set. Estonia, however, kept on delivering deadly services in the second act, which helped them to level in sets. One of the stars did have to step in after that when Michal Kubiak came in and turned the momentum back in Poland's favour. After the exciting third set, won by the world champion, the Estonian resistance was broken. Mateusz Bieniek finally spiked and blocked his team to their first win in Rotterdam: 25-17.

Artur Szalpuk (POL) led all scorers with 23 points.
