Fatma Yildirim“I did not see any empty seat today so I am very grateful to our fans. It was an incredible feeling. We were very emotional as the national anthem was played. We are happy that we won 3-0 in front of our own audience because the result is very important for the standing in the group. We have an important match for the top spot against Serbia. They are the reigning European and World champions but we are a very good team as well. With the support of our fans, we want to win tomorrow’s game.”
Player of Turkey
Emile Rousseaux, coach of France: “Our passing was obviously not good and this caused many problems to our setters. We could not use our middle blockers, and our outside hitters had to deal with a strong block and defence from Turkey. My players are not that experienced and they do not play outside of France very often. We need this type of competitions to improve. When I started with this team last year, only seven of my players were playing in the starting six in their clubs in France and we had 11 substitutes. That is why we are no. 40 in the FIVB ranking. I do not have enough players to compete at such a tournament.
It was the first such experience for all of my players bar two. We played against Bulgaria in the first game and we did not understand it was something special. We played very relaxed but after that, we realised that by beating Greece we would most probably have qualified for the next round. This is a top-level competition and you must experience it to be able to deal with it. You cannot prepare this kind of things during the practice. We will start working again with our youth. I have many players who have good skills and participating in this kind of tournament was important for us. Our young girls gained so much experience. They learnt what it means to play in a top competition, mentally and emotionally. They were scared of stress. This is something they have improve and learn to deal with.”
