Match Report

Bulgaria top Finland to secure spot in 8th Finals

Article

Bulgaria secured their second straight victory in Pool A and as a result, their progression to the next round as well after finishing the pool phase in third place.

The ‘Lionesses’ started the tournament with three losses in a row – but they managed to change the course of their campaign courtesy of their victories over Greece and Finland.

While making their first appearance at EuroVolley in 30 years, Finland could not make it through the first phase as they finish fifth in Pool A with a 1-4 win-loss record.

Interestingly, all of the starting players of Bulgaria scored at least six points, with middle blocker Nasya Dimitrova topping the charts with 11.

Day 7 Recap

Play

“Normally, it is not easy to finish third at this stage with two wins only. However, thanks to the other results in the group, we were able to avoid the match with the team finishing first in Pool C, the Netherlands. I hope that we will use this opportunity and return to Ankara again. After learning the name of our next opponent tonight, we will start our preparations and hopefully return from Budapest with a good result.”

Elitsa Vasileva
Captain of Bulgaria

Laura Pihlajamäki, captain of Finland: “I am really happy with the way we fought here. We enjoyed every match. Of course, we wanted to win this game and go further but it is okay. Bulgaria is a top team and today we could not put up a fight against them. Now we are disappointed because of this but overall I can say I am happy about this tournament and satisfied with how we fought against such strong teams.

We are not the tallest or the most famous players of this tournament but we are really hard-workers and we fight for every ball, we defended really hard and we never gave up. I hope everybody saw this and we keep on doing that so we will be here also next time.”
