"We have kept the same core of the team from 2019, but with the addition of some young, talented players. Our basic opponents will be Spain and Austria, though both are missing players due to injuries. This, however, has hampered our scouting, as we have limited information on some of their new players."

Guillermo Naranjo
Head coach of Greece

"We are very happy to be participating in these qualifiers for the European Championship. In my opinion, Greece are the favourites to take first place in the pool and I'm sure they'd like to prove this on the court against our team on the opening day. We need to show our fighting spirit and learn from our game against Greece. For every point, every set and every match, our goal is to improve ourselves individually and as a team and this is what we try to do."

Eelco Beijl
Head coach of Norway

"Although most of us have not played many matches this year due to the pandemic, we are all in excellent condition and raring to go."

Greece start off with emphatic shutout of Norway

Article 7 May 2021

Greece started the women’s EuroVolley 2021 qualifiers with an emphatic shutout of Norway. On Pool C opening night in Larissa, the tournament hosts mastered a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-17) victory.

The first half of the first set was quite competitive and tight. After that, Greece started playing more efficiently in attack, took control of the scoreboard and ran off with a convincing 25-18 win, shaped up by Konstantina Vlachaki with a successful spike.

Outside Norway’s five-point run after 15-5 Greece’s way, the second set was completely one-sided. The home side reduced the number of unforced errors and cruised comfortably to a 25-12 landslider.

Set three went level through 12-12, but then Greece killed the suspense with an 11-1 run. The 25-17 winner was delivered with a spike by Olga Strantzali, who topped the overall scorers’ chart of the match on 15 points.

Guillermo Naranjo, head coach of Greece: "It was normal that we didn't play our best, but the important thing is that we started the qualifiers with a clear win. We have to forget this game immediately and focus on the next match against Spain, especially after their big win against Austria today."

Eelco Beijl, head coach of Norway: "We have to congratulate Greece. We did our best, but it was clear that the Greek team was faster in the game. I am proud of the way my team played and hope we do the same again in the other matches against Spain and Austria."
