Pool A

· Serbia are the hosts of Pool A. Belgrade will also host matches in each knockout round, including both semi-finals, the bronze medal match and the gold medal match.
· Serbia have won the European Championships three times: 2011, 2017 and 2019. The only other team to be European champions on as many as three occasions is Russia (13 as Soviet Union, six as Russia).
· Serbia can become the first team to win three consecutive European Championships since Russia in 1997, 1999 and 2001. This was also done by Soviet Union (seven in a row from 1958 to 1979 and three in a row from 1949 to 1951).
· Serbia also recorded podium finishes at the European Championships in 1951 (third as Yugoslavia), 2007 (second) and 2015 (third).
· Only one of the last 12 European Championships was won by a team playing the final on a home court. That was Serbia's triumph at the 2011 event, defeating Germany 3-2 in the final in Belgrade.
· Serbia goes into this tournament on a run of 16 consecutive wins at the European Championships, since a 3-1 defeat against Russia in the 2015 semi-finals.
· Serbia (including Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro) have lost all 10 matches against Russia (including Soviet Union) at the European Championships. Seven of those 10 defeats were in straight sets.
· Serbia are the reigning world champions. They won the world title for the first time in 2018 in Japan.
· Serbia claimed a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. They were the highest-placed CEV team in the women's tournament.

· Russia (including Soviet Union) are the only country to compete in all 31 previous editions of the European Championships. They won 19 of those 31 tournaments (13 as Soviet Union, six as Russia).
· Russia's 19th and most recent European Championships success was in 2015. They defeated the Netherlands in straight sets in the final in Rotterdam. They have since finished sixth in 2017 and seventh in 2019 (their worst result at the event).
· Russia (including Soviet Union) can fail to finish on the podium in three successive European Championships for the first time.
· Russia (including Soviet Union) have won all 22 matches at the European Championships against their other opponents in Pool A. Only one of those 22 games went to a deciding set (versus Belgium in 2009).
· Russian Olympic Committee were the lowest-placed team among the four European entrants at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. They finished seventh after a 3-1 defeat against Brazil in the quarter-finals.

· Belgium make their 11th appearance at the European Championships, and their fifth in a row. Their only podium finish was third in 2013 (defeated Serbia 3-2 in the bronze medal match).
· Belgium finished ninth at the 2019 European Championships, losing 3-1 versus Russia in the round of last 16.
· Belgium had five-set matches against Russia (lost) and Serbia (won) in the 2021 Volleyball Nations League. The Belgians finished the tournament in ninth, one place behind the Russians, but four places above the Serbians (who did not enter the competition with their best players).

· France were 21st out of 24 teams at the 2019 European Championships. They finished bottom of Pool A, losing four of their five matches (including a 3-1 defeat versus Serbia).
· France's best performance at the European Championships was fourth in 1951. That competition was a six-team tournament, and the French lost four of their five matches in straight sets.
· France won their only European Championship match versus Azerbaijan (3-1 in 2007). They have not beaten Belgium at the event since 1987 and Serbia since 1971 (then Yugoslavia).

· Azerbaijan have been an ever-present at the European Championships since their debut in 2005. They have recorded two fourth-place finishes (2005 and 2017).
· Azerbaijan finished 10th at the 2019 European Championships, losing in straight sets against Bulgaria in the round of last 16.
· Azerbaijan won only one of their seven matches at the European Championships versus their other Pool A opponents, a 3-1 victory against Serbia and Montenegro in the 2005 group stage. They won only one set in the six defeats.

· Bosnia and Herzegovina are the only team making their European Championships debut in this year's event.
· The two teams to make their European Championships debut in 2019 were Estonia and Portugal. Both teams lost all five matches and finished as the bottom two teams in the tournament.

Pool B

· Bulgaria are the hosts of Pool B. Plovdiv will also host matches in the round of last 16 and the quarter-finals.
· Bulgaria participated in 29 of the 31 previous European Championships, only failing to compete in 1949 and 1951.
· Bulgaria won the European Championships in 1981 (they hosted the event that year). They also recorded podium finishes in 1979 (third) and 2001 (third, event hosted by Bulgaria).
· Bulgaria finished eighth at the 2019 European Championships, losing in straight sets versus Serbia in the quarter-finals. Their path to the last eight included a 3-0 win versus Greece in the group stage.
· Greece (5) are the opponents Bulgaria have played the most European Championships matches against and remain with a 100% winning record.
· Bulgaria lost their most recent match at the European Championships versus Spain (2011), Czech Republic (2013), Poland (2013) and Germany (2017).

· Poland took part in 30 of the 31 previous European Championships, only failing to participate in 1993.
· Poland won the European Championships in 2003 and 2005. Since those two triumphs, their only podium finish was third in 2009.
· Only Russia (26 - 17 as Soviet Union, nine as Russia) and Germany (11 - seven as East Germany, four as Germany) have recorded as many podium finishes at the European Championships as Poland (11).
· Poland finished fourth at the 2019 European Championships. Their two knockout phase wins at the event were 3-0 against Spain in the round of last 16 and 3-2 versus Germany in the quarter-finals.
· Poland lost in straight sets against Germany in the 2021 Volleyball Nations League. The Poles finished 11th in that competition, one place below the Germans.
· The opponents Poland have won the most European Championship matches against are Bulgaria (14) and Germany (14, including East Germany and West Germany).

· Since reunification, Germany have competed in all 15 European Championships. They recorded four podium finishes in that period: second in 2011 and 2013, and third in 1991 and 2003.
· East Germany won the European Championships in 1983 and 1987. West Germany's best result at the event was fifth in 1983.
· Germany were sixth at the 2019 European Championships. They won all five group stage matches (including 3-1 versus Spain) and defeated Slovenia in the round of last 16, but were beaten in a deciding set by Poland in the quarter-finals.
· Germany won their most recent European Championships match against Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece and Spain, but have lost each of their last six games in the event versus Poland.

· Czech Republic returns to the European Championships after failing to qualify for the 2019 edition. They finished 12th (out of 16 teams) in 2017.
· Czechoslovakia won the European Championships in 1955. It was the only one of the first 11 tournaments not won by Soviet Union.
· Czech Republic's most recent podium at the European Championships was in 1997 (third). They have not finished higher than eighth in their eight participations since.

· Spain make their seventh appearance at the European Championships. Their best result was ninth in 2009.
· Spain finished 15th at the 2019 European Championships. They secured the fourth and final qualifying place from Pool D, but were beaten in straight sets by Poland in the round of last 16.
· Spain won five of their 27 matches at the European Championships. One of those five victories was against one of their Pool B opponents, 3-0 versus Bulgaria in 2011 (Spain's only win in straight sets at the European Championships).

· Greece are in the European Championships for the sixth time. It is the second time they have participated in consecutive editions, after 1991 and 1993.
· Greece's best result at the European Championships was eighth in 1991. They finished 14th in 2019 (lost in straight sets versus Netherlands in the round of last 16).
· Greece have won four of their 30 matches at the European Championships. They defeated France and Albania in 1991, and France and Finland in 2019. They lost all 10 matches at the event versus their Pool B opponents.

Pool C

· Croatia are the hosts of Pool C. The matches will be played in Zadar.
· Croatia competed in 13 of the 14 European Championships since making their debut in 1993. The only one they missed in that run was 2003.
· Croatia finished second at three consecutive European Championships in 1995, 1997 and 1999. Their best result since was fifth in 2013.
· Croatia (3) are the team to record the most second-place finishes at the European Championships without ever winning the event.
· Croatia finished 11th at the European Championships in 2017 and 2019. Their 2019 campaign included a win in straight sets against Hungary in the group stage.
· At the European Championships, Croatia lost each of their last four matches against Italy and both of their last two versus Belarus.

· Italy make their 21st consecutive appearance at the European Championships, since they last failed to compete in 1979.
· Italy won the European Championships in 2007 and 2009. They did not finish on the podium again until they were third in 2019.
· Italy finished in the top eight in each of the last 20 European Championships. Their worst result at the event was 11th in 1967 and 1977.
· Italy have won 100 of their 165 matches at the European Championships. The 100th victory was in straight sets versus Poland to secure a third-place finish in 2019.
· Italy have a 100% winning record at the European Championships against Switzerland (3), Belarus (2) and Slovakia (1). They have not faced Hungary in this event since a 3-2 win in the 1985 group stage.
· Italy finished sixth at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. They were beaten in straight sets by Serbia in the quarter-finals.

· Belarus compete in their fifth consecutive European Championships, and their 10th in total. Their best performance was seventh in 2017.
· Belarus were 22nd out of 24 teams at the 2019 European Championships. They lost all five matches, including defeats versus Slovakia and Switzerland.

· Hungary are in the European Championships for the fourth successive edition, after missing each tournament from 1989 to 2013. This is their 18th participation in total.
· All four of Hungary's podium finishes at the European Championships came in an eight-year spell from 1975 to 1983. They finished second once and third on three occasions.
· Hungary finished 20th at the 2019 European Championships. They recorded a 3-0 win against Estonia in their opening match, but won only one set in their remaining four games.

· Slovakia make their fifth appearance at a European Championships, after 2003 (12th), 2007 (13th), 2009 (13th) and 2019 (12th).
· Slovakia have won five of their 17 matches at the European Championships. Three of those victories came in 2019 (including against Switzerland and Belarus). They went on to be eliminated in straight sets by Italy in the round of last 16.

· Switzerland compete in the European Championships for the fifth time, after 1967 (13th), 1971 (12th), 2013 (14th) and 2019 (19th).
· Switzerland have won four of their 23 matches at the European Championships. Those victories were against Sweden (1967 and 1971), Belgium (1967) and Belarus (2019).

Pool D

· Romania are the hosts of Pool D. The matches will be played in Cluj-Napoca.
· This is Romania's 26th participation in the European Championships. Their only podium finish was a third place in 1963.
· Romania (25) are the country to have made the most appearances at the European Championships without ever winning the title.
· Romania finished 13th at the 2019 European Championships. They were beaten in straight sets by eventual champions Serbia in the round of last 16.
· At the European Championships, Romania lost each of their last five matches versus Netherlands after they were victorious in each of their first eight games against them.
· Romania have not recorded a European Championships win against one of their Pool D opponents since 1989, when they defeated Finland and Turkey.

· Turkey make their 10th consecutive appearance at the European Championships, and their 15th in total. They have finished on the podium four times: second in 2003 and 2019, and third in 2011 and 2017.
· Turkey and Serbia are the two teams to reach the semi-finals at each of the last three European Championships.
· Turkey lost three of their last 14 matches at the European Championships. All three defeats were versus Serbia, while they won each of their last 11 games against all other opponents.
· Turkey's route to the final of the 2019 European Championships included wins against Finland (3-2 in the group stage) and Netherlands (3-0 in the quarter-finals).
· Turkey have a 100% winning record in European Championships matches versus Finland (3), Sweden (1) and Ukraine (1).
· The two best-placed CEV teams in the 2021 Volleyball Nations League were Turkey (third) and Netherlands (seventh). The Turkish team are the only CEV representative to finish on the podium in the VNL (second in 2018, third in 2021).
· Turkey finished fifth at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. They lost 15-13 in a deciding set versus Korea in the quarter-finals.

· Netherlands have competed in 28 of the 31 European Championships. They won the title in 1995, an event they hosted.
· Netherlands have been runners-up at the European Championships on four occasions: 1991, 2009, 2015 and 2017. They also finished third in 1985.
· Netherlands finished fifth at the 2019 European Championships. All seven of their matches were decided in straight sets: six consecutive victories (including one versus Romania) followed by an exit to Turkey in the quarter-finals.
· Netherlands were beaten by Turkey at the 2019 European Championships and in the Volleyball Nations League in 2019 and 2021. The Dutch won only one set in those three defeats.

· Ukraine are in the European Championships for the ninth time. Their best result was third on their debut in the competition in 1993.
· Ukraine finished 17th at the 2019 European Championships. Their win in straight sets in the final group stage game against Portugal ended a run of 11 consecutive defeats in the competition.
· Ukraine have lost all European Championship matches against Netherlands (2) and Turkey (1), but won both games in the competition versus Romania (1993 and 1997).

· Finland participate in the European Championships for the fourth time, after 1977 (12th out of 12 teams), 1989 (12th out of 12 teams) and 2019 (18th out of 24 teams).
· Finland won two of their 19 matches at the European Championships: 3-2 against West Germany in 1977 (the Finns' debut game in the competition) and 3-1 versus France in 2019.

· Sweden end a 38-year absence from the European Championships. Their three previous appearances were in 1967 (15th out of 15 teams), 1971 (15th out of 18 teams) and 1983 (12th out of 12 teams).
· Sweden won three of their 22 matches at the European Championships. All three victories were in 1971: against England, Denmark and Austria.
