News
The EuroVolley 2023 Women's Pool C is probably the most competitive pool, therefore every game and set matter, making the quest for highly-coveted tickets to the last 16 even fiercer. The battle between Sweden and Azerbaijan highlighted action in Dusseldorf on Wednesday. Isabelle Haak, tallying 34 points, led Sweden to an extremely important win that gave them a ticket to the 1/8 finals.
Isabelle Haak keeps impressing with her numbers, being the most productive player of the EuroVolleyW edition so far (108 points). In three out of Sweden's four games she scored 30+ points (vs Greece, Germany and Azerbaijan), recording the highest tally on Wednesday night - 34 points (3 aces, 31 kills - 51% of success in attack). The game against Azerbaijan was a high-stakes duel - as there was a ticket to the 1/8 finals to grab for the winner. Sweden handled playing under pressure better. Having their exceptional leader on the court, the Scandinavians put their hearts into fighting to keep the ball alive after huge attacks by Azerbaijan's star Polina Rahimova.
The team under the guidance of coach Jukka Lehtonen beat Azerbaijan 3-1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18) and, along with Turkiye and Germany, already secured a spot in the last 16. Czechia and Azerbaijan are still in the quest, however the fate of Azerbaijan is now in the hands of other teams. Earlier on Wednesday, Turkiye extended their winning streak to four wins, defeating Greece 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 28-26). It was the last Greece's game at this EuroVolley as they were eliminated from the quest for the European crown.
