Team Ukraine win against team Sweden in a crucial match for Pool D

The first match of the day started in high spirits in Cluj-Napoca. Team Ukraine faces team Sweden in the BT Arena in a highly important match in the economy of Pool D. With a victory here, Sweden would have been sure of third place in the group. However, Ukraine had entirely something else in mind for this game and started really strong in attack, led by the incredible Olesia Rykhliuk, who is their best player so far in EuroVolley 2021. After a first cat-and-mouse set, with several changes on the leaderboard, Ukraine finally sealed it 25-23. The second set has started in the same fashion, with a very balanced early game. Isabelle Haak and Olesia Rykhliuk have been dominant for their teams, launching devastating attacks from opposite sides of the field. Ukraine forced their opponent to make many errors, which cost them the second set of the game. The third set had no story to tell again. Despite another Isabelle Haak masterclass, this time, her teammates have let her down. Team Ukraine has been dominant on the serve and in defence, counting on Olesia Rykhliuk to finish off their attacks. It’s been a disappointing day for Sweden and a very good performance for team Ukraine, who can dream of going further in the competition.

After the match, Isabelle Haak told us: "We couldn’t find our way today, we were really frustrated on the court, stressed. We need to do whatever we can in the game against the Netherlands. It will be a really difficult game."

A very happy Iryna Trushkina said: "We have to be focused until the last point, it doesn't matter who we play against. We need to shoot for the top of the table."
Match Report

Sweden qualify for EuroVolley for first time since 1983!

Article 14 May 2021

The Swedish women’s national team qualified for EuroVolley for the first time in 38 years. In a tight Pool B qualification match on Friday in Tbilisi, they persevered to claim a 3-2 (15-25, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 15-11) win over Ukraine, and improving to 4-0 in the pool, to secure one of the top two spots in the final standings. Ukraine drop to 2-2 and will have to contend with Portugal for the other available ticket to the finals.

Ukraine outspiked Sweden to completely dominate the first set. With middle Diana Meliushkyna on fire in both blocking and offence in the conclusive part of the set, Ukraine scored six in a row to win it by an impressive 25-15. Sweden reacted with a fantastic Isabelle Haak hammering 12 points, including the winner, towards a 25-18 win in set two.

She continued to score away in set three (11 points), but once Ukraine stepped in front at 11-10 after five points in a row, the two teams offered a fierce battle through the end of the set, with frequent changes in the lead. Finally, Haak produced a sizzling ace to deliver the set point and converted it to a 25-23 close with another strong serve that made the opponents commit an error in attack. Setter Olga Skrypak did a fabulous job creating variety in Ukraine’s attack to lead her team to a 25-18 win in set four and prompt a deciding set.

It was the Swedish players who kept their cool through the tie-breaker. Two stuff blocks by Dalila-Lilly and an ace each by Isabelle Haak and Alexandra Lazic made the difference towards a 15-11 Swedish win. Haak upped her match total to a formidable 37 points, while Nadiia Kodola was Ukraine’s best scorer on 18.
