2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship

Two neighbouring countries – Azerbaijan and Georgia – played host to EuroVolley for the very first time in their history. Baku, Ganja and Tbilisi were the cities chosen to host the first such major Volleyball competition held in the Caucasus area after Volleyball had drawn much attention and large audiences at the Baku 2015 European Games. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev attended all of the matches played by the home team at the iconic National Gymnastics Arena in Baku. The hosts eventually had to be content with fourth place – thus equaling their best result in the competition from the 2005 edition held in Croatia. Turkey edged reigning European champions Russia in the quarterfinals before finishing with the bronze medal while Serbia completed a clean sweep of all of their matches to secure a second continental crown – after topping the podium in 2011 at home – following their victory over the Netherlands in the grand finale of the tournament.
