· Croatia qualified for the Eighth Finals with a W3-L2 record, losing to group winners France (3-0) and second-placed Germany (3-0).
· Croatia (3) have already won more matches at the 2021 European championships than at their three previous participations combined (W2-L9).
· Croatia can win three consecutive matches at the European championships for the first time. Their wins against Estonia and Slovakia were already their first successive victories at the tournament.
· Leo Andric (91) is the fourth-most prolific scorer in this year's final round, behind the Netherlands' Nimir Abdel-Aziz (122), Turkey's Adis Lagumdzija (104) and Belgium's Sam Deroo (92).
· Andric has recorded third-most aces in the final round, behind Bulgaria's Todor Skrimov (17) and Italy's Alessandro Michieletto (15).

SLOVINSKO VS. CHORVATSKO

Stříbrný tým z posledního mistrovství Evropy Slovinsko potvrdil v osmifinálovém duelu s Chorvaty roli favorita a vyhrál 3:1 (25:20, 25:18, 19:25, 25:12). Třetí set Slovincům sebral v koncovce pěti esy za sebou chorvatský univerzál Leo Andrič. Jinak byli Slovinci lepším týmem.

 

Vstup do zápasu vyšel lépe hráčům Chorvatska, kteří se díky výbornému servisu univerzála Lea Andriče a dobrému útoku ujali ihned vedení 4:0. Jejich soupeři ovšem odpověděli dobrými bloky a taky tvrdým servisem, takže bylo brzy srovnáno (6:6). Pak dostal chorvatský nahrávač Tsimafei Zhukouski úder míčem do obličeje od vlastního spoluhráče a musel být střídán. Slovinci byli lepší na příjmu a jejich útoky byly důraznější. Zejména smečař Klemen Cebulj sbíral jeden bod za druhým. Postupně se ujali vedení (14:12 a 17:13) a náskok kontrolovali až do konce setu.

 

Na začátku druhého setu byl chorvatský nahrávač zpět ve hře, ale na obrazu hry se toho příliš nezměnilo. Slovinci byli důraznější a lepší na servisu. Když trefil blokař Alen Pajenk eso při podání, vedli už 8:4. A jejich náskok postupně narůstal až na devítibodový rozdíl (21:12). Set bez problémů dotáhli a zvýšili své vedení v zápase.

 

Vyrovnaný třetí set měl nečekanou koncovku. Slovinci hráli stále velmi dobře v útoku a většinu setu vedli. Do koncovky šli s dvoubodovým náskokem (19:17), ovšem pak přišla chyba na bloku a úspěšná smeč Kruna Nikačeviče. Za stavu 19:19 se na servis postavil Leo Andrič a pěti esy v řadě za sebou rozhodl o tom, že zápas bude dál pokračovat.

 

Slovinci šli ovšem jasně za svým cílem. Opět skvělým servisem a pak také dobrou hrou v obraně rozehráli čtvrtý set lépe. Vedli postupně 10:4, pak 14:6 a kráčeli jasně za vítězstvím.

 

Leo Andrič, univerzál Chorvatska: „Soupeř byl lepší, my jsme se snažili ze všech sil, ale stačilo to jen na jeden set. Slovinci si šli za výhrou od začátku. Mně se povedlo zaskočit je servisem. Ani to neumím vysvětlit proč mi to tak šlo, prostě jsem to zkusil. Ale hned v setu dalším jsme byli úplně dole, to nebylo dobře.“

 

Alen Pajenk, blokař Slovinska: „Byl to těžký zápas, věděli jsme, že Chorvatsko bude silný soupeř. To bylo vidět na začátku hry. Poté jsme začali hrát lépe, přehráli jsme jejich bloky a zlepšili obranu. Ve třetím setu měli dobré podání, když trefili pět es za sebou. Naštěstí pro nás jsme se vrátili do čtvrtého setu ještě silnější a došli si pro vítězství.“
