Russia do not dissappoint - no surprises in the opening match of EuroVolley Pool C

Article 12 September 2019

Team Russia, the reigning European Champions, won the opening match of the 2019 CEV Volleyball European Championships pool C in Ljubljana's Stožice Arena. Russians beat Turkey 3-1 to record their first win of the tournament.

Turkey won the first point of the match but then Russia quickly took the matters into their own hands, and after Dmitrii Volkov's great serves and two aces for a 16-7 lead, which they kept till the end of the one-sided first part of the game (25-13). The second set proved to be the most exciting of the entire match as Turkey and Russia leveled at 22 - 22, but soon it was Turkey to take the lead 24-22. Their first set point opportunity did not pay off, but Russia's serve to the net ended things in Turkey's favour. In the tihird and fourt set of the match Russia did not allow any more surprises and won securely 25- 17 and 25-15. Russian outside-spiker Dmitrii Volkov topped the score cards with 16 points, while Turkey's opposite Adis Lagumdzija concluded the match with as many as 15 points.

“Russia are a team of world-class champions, one of the best teams at this Championship if not even the best. They are the best team in our pool. We are satisfied how we played. We played as a team. We had a few series of mistakes, with five, six errors, which should not happen this level. If we improve the reception, we have good chances against North Macedonia tomorrow.”

Adis Lagumdzija
opposite (TUR)

"It was very tough to start the first match of the championship. All team was a little bit worried about the result, that's why we had good motivation to win. We won the first set very easy and in the second set we were relaxed, which is why we lost it. It was a cold shower, we needed to improve our game and concentration. Everyone felt more confident in third and fourth set."

Dmitriy Muserskiy
middle-blocker (RUS)

"It was first game and we were a little bit nervous. We started a bit slowly and did not find our best game and best conditions. It was tough, not easy. But after second set we won really confidently, and we are happy to go straight. Today it was very important to find our game and start this championship to find our level. "

Igor Kobzar
setter and team captain (RUS)

"In the first match we are searching our play rhythm. We served pretty well today, serve and reception were a lot better in the opening, but in the second set, probably after easy first set and we were winning in the second set, we had a few minutes of lack of concentration, like always in volleyball, it becomes difficult. But I am happy that we lost the second set because we did not deserve to win it. Then the team played really focused and we won with confidence."

Tuomas Sammelvuo
head coach (RUS)
