Overview

Both teams competed at the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup taking place in Ljubljana this July. In the semi-finals Slovenia edged Belarus by 3-1, although at that time the guests started the match with a setback since their best opposite Radzivon Miskevich had problems with his knee. Slovenia is the more internationally successful side, having claimed silver at the 2015 CEV European Championship. Silver medals from the 2019 European Golden League have so far been the best achievement for Belarus, as their best previous result was the 15th place at the 2013 CEV European Championship.

Match Report

Hosts Slovenia with a decisive win for a start of #EuroVolleyM

Article 12 September 2019

In the final match of the day in Stožice Arena (Ljubljana) Slovenia claimed their first victory in pool C against Belarus. This was the second encounter of these two national teams in a few months, as they`ve met already in the VNL 2019 qualifications early in July, also in Stožice Arena.

In front of the loud home crowd Slovenia showed early on who`s home ground this is as they won the first set 25-17 after a strong serve performance by Jan Kozamernik. But it came even stronger in the second set, when Kozamernik`s unpredictable float serves and bullet proof Slovenian blocking defence proved to be an unbeatable combination – Slovenia made a 9-0 partial score in the very beginning of the set. Belarus eventually managed to recover, but it was a safe set in the pocket early on, as Slovenians won 25-14.

Some 4000 spectators enjoyed the first highlight of CEV EuroVolley 2019 day 1 in Stožice Arena also in the third set. After an even beginning Slovenians pooled away in the second half of the set and easily secured their first win of the tournament with three straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19). Jan Kozamernik was the top scorer for team Slovenia with a total of 15 points, and for team Belarus Andrei Radziuk and Viachas Charapovich both with 6 points.

"It was a good game, but difficult. The score was not close, particularly in the first set, but the first match is a difficult match, because you are nervous at the start of the tournament. The guys played very well, particularly in jump, block, serve. We have created clear situations for block, defence, counter attack. We have done a lot of work in preparation for this tournament. This is only the little first step, the first match. We wait and stay with feet on the ground. "

Alberto Giuliani
head coach (SLO)

"Today we didn`t play our best game, we made too many errors in reception and serves and we all played very bad. It was also difficult to play against home team and the home crowd in this arena, as we have only had one practice here. We`ve played strong against Slovenia in the VNL qualifications in July but this time we just couldn`t build our game after such bad reception throughout the whole game."

Siarhei Busel
middle-blocker and team captain (BLR)

"Today I think my team was a bit nervous before the game, our reception was very bad and without reception you can`t realise any attacking balls. Slovenian team played very good in defence, they have caught our attacks and after that returned with counter-attacks. We look forward towards the next matches, as today we played a really, really bad game."

Viktar Beksha
head coch (BLR)

"I think that tactically we have played really great. We were agressive from the first point, we took advantage of our great float service. We managed to make a big difference and at the end take a win. Jan Kozamernik was great at the service, we've played excellent defence. We didn't let Belarus play their game, however I think that they are a great team and they will be a big challenge for all the opponents in pool C."

Tine Urnaut
outside-spiker and team captain (SLO)
