Overview

It is France vs Italy again, with more on the line that the same fixture last week which the hosts won 3-1.  After both coming through their quarterfinals unscathed (France 3-0 over Finland, Italy 3-0 over Turkey) these two power houses of European Volleyball go toe to toe again knowing that the result will define their teams success at EuroVolley 2019.  The winner moves to Paris, where they will have a great chance of leaving with a medal, while the loser will return home.  It is going to be an incredible evening in Nantes.

"We feel good, we're going to take this match like any other and play hard. Every match is different. Let's use what we've been using since the beginning, serve, defence, and attack. Everything basically; we'll try to do the same."

"Today will be a big match against France, who is one of the best teams in the world. We are all ok and we hope that this will be a fun match. A battle. The French receive and defend really well, they play with their crowd, but we are not afraid."

Head-to-Head

  • France and Italy will meet for the second time at EuroVolley 2019, after they faced each other in their final group phase match in Montpellier on 18 September. France won 3-1 to ensure they finished first in Group A, ahead of Italy. Ivan Zaytsev (21 points) was Italy's top scorer in the match, while Earvin Ngapeth (15) scored most points for France.

  • France have won their last three EuroVolley matches against Italy, since a 3-2 defeat in the final in Berlin in 2003.

  • Italy also won the knockout match before that final in a EuroVolley tournament: a 3-1 win in the bronze-medal match in 1997.

  • Earlier this year, France also beat Italy 3-1 in the Volleyball Nations League on 29 June. Kévin Tillie was France's top scorer on 15 points in that match.

France

  • France are aiming for their eighth European championship podium finish and their second European title, after 2015.

  • France have won all of their six matches this EuroVolley tournament, dropping only one set: against upcoming opponents Italy in their final group phase match on 18 September (3-1).

  • The last team to claim the European title with a maximum of one lost set was Netherlands in 1997. Only Yugoslavia avoided a straight-set defeat against Holland that campaign (3-1 loss in the final).

  • France could win seven consecutive EuroVolley matches for the first time in their history. It is the fourth time they have won six EuroVolley matches in a row.

  • France lost two of their previous three quarter-final matches in EuroVolley tournaments: 3-1 defeats against Serbia (2011) and Russia (2013). Their only win in the quarter-finals was against Serbia in 2015 (3-1) on their way to their only European title to-date.

  • Stephen Boyer scored 19 points in the 3-0 win over Finland in the eight finals, to reach 108 total points at EuroVolley 2019. No other French player has scored more than 57 points in the tournament (Julien Lyneel).

  • Kévin Tillie is the best receiver at EuroVolley 2019 with a 43% perfect receptions percentage.

Italy

  • Italy are hoping to claim their seventh European title and their first since 2005. Only Russia (14, including as Soviet Union) have won more European titles.

  • Italy won five of their six matches at EuroVolley 2019, the only exception being a 3-1 defeat against upcoming opponents France in their final group phase match.

  • Italy could win six matches in a single EuroVolley tournament for the first time since 2005 (6), when they claimed their most recent European title.

  • In 2017, Italy were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Belgium (3-0). In 2011, 2013 and 2015, Italy won their quarter-final tie (twice against Finland, once against Russia).

  • Gabriele Nelli was Italy's top scorer in the 3-0 win over Turkey in the eight finals on 14 points. Simone Anzani (12) and Osmany Juantorena Portuondo (10) also reached double figures in scoring.

  • Ivan Zaytsev is still Italy's top scorer at EuroVolley 2019 on 101 points. Zaytsev only appeared in the first set against Turkey, scoring two points.

Match Report

France sweep Italy in amazing atmosphere!

Article 24 September 2019

France qualify for the semifinals of their EuroVolley 2019 by sweeping Italy 3-0 in quarterfinals. Never endangered in the first set, they had an extremely tense ending of the second set, saving three set points, including one decisive block by Lyneel. The hosts went on to win the last set easily in an incredible, outstanding, deafening atmosphere in Hall XXL, Nantes. Boyer was the best scorer again, with no fewer than nine aces, whereas all French players proved excellent.

Tillie’s men will face Serbia or Ukraine in Paris on Friday with a ticket for EuroVolley 2019’s final at stake. Bercy’s fans will need to try and top tonight’s ambiance but given the once-in-a-lifetime thrill it provided all the French present in the arena, let us just say it will be hard to beat!

"We knew it would be difficult today. The game in Montpellier was nothing compared to tonight. We played better, we made the game for ourselves. I felt great personally, in attack and in serve, but we are team that always plays altogether. Now we're going to go to Paris to beat whoever shows up and get to the final."

"We were nervous at first, it was a real psychological war. At the end of set 2, I had two opportunities to draw the match but we made too many mistakes tonight to win."
