Match Report

Azerbaijan smashed Romania taking 2nd place in Pool C

Article 29 August 2019

Azerbaijan opened the game in the best possible way, gaining quickly a solid advantage of 8-2 and improving it to a 10-point-difference which they kept until the end of this set. It was a huge merit of outstanding performance of Polina RAHIMOVA who served as many as 6 aces only in the opening set.

The second set went the same way, Romania were not able to stop RAHIMOVA’s attacks and serves. In addition Azerbaijan block started to work even better, so after 41 minutes of game the team under guidance of Giovanni CAPRARA was leading 2-0.

In the third set Romania improved their game, they had several good spikes, but in the last rallies Azerbaijan dominated again and won the game after only 66 minutes.

RAHIMOVA scored impressive 30 points – 10 from aces! Azerbaijan finished the group phase 2nd in Pool C.

Day 7 Recap

Play

“It was a much better game than yesterday, when we weren’t ready and Estonia played really good. We had a meeting and a video to watch Romania, and we came 100% prepared for this game. We played focused, so we could win the match.”

Yelzaveta SAMADOVA
outside spiker of Azerbaijan

Giovanni CAPRARA, head coach of Azerbaijan:

"It was not difficult game, beacuse Polina served incredible. During the match we had some situations which were not perfect, but the most important was the win. The second place is very good for us. I don't care who's the next opponent. The most important to play well in Round of 16."

"At the beginning of the game, we couldn't do anything against the service of Polina Rahimova. Our young players didn't know what they have to do in this situation. During the breaks, I tried to increase their self-confidence, and in the third set, they showed that they can play much better."

Luciano PEDULLA
head coach of Romania

Alexandra TRICA, outside spiker of Romania:

"We knew that our opponent is full of motivation, because they lost one point yesterday, but today we were not able to find our rhythm. We have only 1% chance in the eighth-final, but we will prepare well, and try to play better than today."
