Match Report

The Netherlands earn a hard-fought win over Sweden

Article

Definitely the Netherlands could imagine a better start of the tournament on home soil as they struggled a lot to defeat Sweden. However, what matters the most is that they won the game adding another three points to their name in the standings and are only one step from getting a spot in the EuroVolley 2021. The 'Oranje' survived the Swedish storm - led by Jacob Link (19 points in the match) to earn important win. Despite problem in reception in the opening part, the hosts were dominant force in attack having 15 kills, once Sweden only 6. Although, they were forced to chase the score in the second part, they successfully did it - mostly thanks to great performance in block (8 stuffs!) that let them to step up in the decisive part. In the second and third set, the Netherlands had problems in attack and that was ruthlessly used by Sweden. Once their leader Jacob Link shone bright scoring 8 points and having 78% of success in attack. After losing a set, the Dutch team was highly-motivated to close the match quickly. They were building their advantage from the beginning, Sweden tried to fight back, but it was not enough. Nimir Abdel Aziz contributed with 22 points in his team win. On Saturday Sweden will face Croatia, once the Netherlands will be back in action on Sunday to take on Croatia.
