Greece survive the first Balkan derby in Pool F

Article

On Saturday, Montenegro and Greece delivered a real Balkan derby that lasted 124 minutes. In the first match of the day in Pool G, taking place in Tbilisi, Greece survived a five-setter after having started badly in the first set. In this 'hot' battle, Greece played better on the attack, and finishing with 64 winning spikes, these became the key to the success. Montenegro, on the other hand, were slightly better on the block and on the serving line.

  • Montenegro stood better the first set, though they lost a little bit of concentration in the end of this part. Greece tried to react, but it was too late to turn things around, and five kill blocks sealed the deal for Montenegro in this first set.
  • Point for a point game marked the beginning of the second set. Greece put up a real fight, surprising their opponents and outclassing them on attakc, finishing this part with 11 winning spikes in total.  Rafail Koumentakis was shining in these moments with seven points to his name.
  • In the beginning of the third set, Montenegro, led by Vojin Cacic, performermed slightly better on attack and took the leadership. Greece, however, improved in all the components and grabbed the set. Koumentakis continued on scoring for Greece, while for Montenegro Aleksandar Minic was giving his best (13 points).
  • Minic in the first moments of the fourth set helped the most to his Montenegro to take the lead at 5-2. They continued performing better and leading 16-12, Greece took a time out. It worked out, and the players around head coach Dimitrios Andreopoulos equalised at 16-16. Athanasios Protospaltis shined but Minic and his teammates fought until the end, and after a close call in the last minutes, brought the match into tiebreak.
  • The tension grew higher in the last set, as none of the teams were giving up. After a cat-and-mouse game, Greece emerged victorious.
