Match Report

Portugal continue their winning streak in Pool G

Article

The match between Portugal and Belarus was a clash of two top-ranked teams in the standings in Pool G. Portugal opened the tournament on home soil, in Matosinhos, with important win and the local team is only one step from progressing to the EuroVolley 2021. Both teams entered the court highly-motivated. Hugo Lucas Gaspar became a leader of Portugal in the opening part scoring 7 points, once a setter - Miguel Tavares Rodrigues served 3 aces. The main problem of Belarus in the entire match, and in the second set especially, were unforced errors. Despite, a solid performance of Belarus' leader Radzivon Miskevich (8 points in set 2), giving away 10 points by own mistake, they lost the second set. In the third set, the visiting team managed to spread their wings, dominating in attack (17 kills to 12). This was a an impulse for Portugal to improve their game to not repeat a scenario from last week when they had to defeat Belarus in five-setter. Radzivon MISKEVICH (BLR) topped the scorers' chart with 21 points, Hugo LUCAS GASPAR (POR) was the best scorer of Portugal. On Saturday, Portugal will take on Norway, once Belarus will face Hungary.

"I think our team performance is on a very good level, a European Championships level, in my opinion. We made a huge step today winning with Belarus for three points. I think it makes us favourites to finish first in this pool. We played great today, especially when it's about energy, in the third set we were down, but we brought back energy in the fourth set, we motivated each other we managed to open with sequence of service and it was very important for us to finish this game in four sets."

Miguel TAVARES RODRIGUES
setter of Portugal

"We knew that this match was going to be very difficult and long, because there was a lot at stake. The service, as always happens at a high level, was the key that made the difference. When we served badly, we lost the set, in this match two aspects stood out: good service and great team spirit, it was enough to look at the faces of the players to see that they would never lose this match. This is a giant step towards to the EuroVolley, which happens for the first time in a row."

Hugo Silva
head coach of Portugal

"Portugal played a very good match, on a high level. They were very good in the service, which was what made the difference. When our reception worked well, we were able to attack and score points, as in the third set. Tomorrow is another day, another match that we will play focused on winning."
