Portugal celebrate a #EuroVolleyM ticket

Article

Saturday is a lucky day for the men's national team of Portugal as by snatching a 3-0 win vs Norway, they grabbed a ticket to the Final Round of the #EuroVolleyM. Portugal will be joining the already qualified team for the 'ultimate Volleyball party of the year' that will take place on September 1-19 in as many as four countries across the continent - Poland, Czechia, Estonia and Finland.

Team leader Hugo Gaspar Lucas was leading his team towards the victory. Norway had their chances on the block (eight by the end of the second set) but this wasn't enough for them to stop the team coached by Hugo Silva.

On the last day of the tournament in Matosinhos, the hosts will lock horns with Hungary, but even a loss will not take away from them the first position in Pool G. Norway, on the other hand, will meet Belarus who are aiming at the second position, still having hopes of reaching the Finals of #EuroVolleyM.

- Norway recorded 5 kill blocks in the first set but Portugal were excellent on attack and with 11 winning spikes opened in their favour.

- The hosts stormed out for a 4-0 lead in the beginning, but with the young Jakob Thelle on the serve, Norway were able to equalise. A point-for-point race marked the next moments, with both teams exchanging the leadership. Smart play by Hugo Gaspar in the decisive moments helped Portugal taking some break points. With the result being 20-15 for Portugal, it seemed that they will easily close, and this is what they did. Fili Cveticanin shined in these moments, with Gaspar and Thiago da Silva Violas helping in important balls.

-The third set seemed to be more balanced, with the play going point for a point (1-1, 11-11). Up until the very last point, Norway were breathing down Portugal's necks by the hosts were able to keep calm and seize the victory.

"We won the three points and this was the most important thing for us. The balance is positive. I am happy because we had the chance to make some changes, and give chance to all the players to enter the court. Even the guys from the bench, when they enter, they do their job, and we work as a group. Tomorrow, we would like to finish with another win. Our fans are watching us at home and even if we are qualified, we want to show our best and make them happy"

Alexandre Ferreira, captain of Portugal

"We played against a very good team, a group of players that are very well prepared technically. We were serving good, we did our best. We are missing injured players, but our young players had the chance to play and learn day by day. This is a good thing for the future, but not enough for the qualification. Tomorrow, we are going to fight and try to put the opponent under pressure. Belarus are physically strong but we will give it a try."

Tore Aleksandersen, head coach of Norway
