Impeccable Greece finish qualifiers with another 3-0

Article 15 May 2021

Greece finished women’s EuroVolley 2021 qualification Pool C with an impeccable record of six wins and 18-0 sets in six matches. On Saturday in Graz, they shut out hosts Austria by 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-17).

With Greece’s main players resting, those on the court clearly enjoyed the opportunity to play and did not let their coach down. They dominated throughout the first set, while opposite Martha Anthouli hammered nine spikes, including the set winner at 25-16. Austria could not find any answers to Greece’s pressure in the second set either. Greece prevailed again to double their lead after 25-18. Set three did not bring about any change in the balance of powers on the court. Greece cruised to a convincing 25-17 close, with their libero Panagiota Rogka practically scoring the winning point by digging a tough ball straight into an empty spot in Austria’s half.

Martha Anthouli was the best scorer of the match with 19 points to her name.

Jan De Brandt, head coach of Austria: “In the first set we did not even do the basics well. In the second and third ones, it was slightly better. We did better in the first tournament in Larissa last week than we performed here at home. We really need three or four months together to work intensively on honing our skills. I hope we will have this opportunity from May to August next year. But now we prepare for the upcoming event, the CEV European Silver League, which will be starting in about two weeks.”

Guillermo Naranjo Hernandez, head coach of Greece: “We played with the second team today. My players showed a great attitude and they were extremely motivated. I did not expect such a clear result, to be honest, and I am very proud of the way my team played!”
