Host team Bulgaria are currently second placed in Pool B, but have one less match than Poland. Team captain and outside hitter Elitsa Vasileva has been Bulgaria’s top scorer so far in the EuroVolley with 25 points scored across both matches.

It won't be an easy encounter for the Bulgarian Lionesses, as Germany are showing good level game at the tournament taking place in Plovdiv.

Germany have one victory and one loss (against the Czech Republic and Poland, respectively). In both their fixtures, they showed mental toughness and a will to fight. Despite Germany’s up and downs to start the tournament, opposite Louisa Lippmann and outside hitter Lina Alsmeier have both been in top form.

Germany shocks hosts Bulgaria in a five-set thriller in Plovdiv

22 August 2021

Bulgaria suffered its first EuroVolley 2021 Women defeat and missed a chance to secure a Round of 16 berth with two rounds to play. The hosts lost a five-set thriller to Germany who also is on a brink of qualifying to the knock-out stages of the tournament.

● Neither team led by more than three points in the tense opening set. Bad reception by Elitsa Vasileva put Germany ahead by two at 21-19. A successful video challenge gave the visitors two set points.

● The response was quick and emphatic. Bulgarians built a five-point margin early in the second set they never relinquished. Germany’s reception fell significantly with just 45% positive ones while the team committed 9 errors in total. Trailing 14-21 German coach Felix Koslowski wrote off the set opting to give some rest to setter Denise Imoudu and middle blocker Camilla Weitzel.

● The gamble paid off as Weitzel was the second top scorer in set 3. Germany won the opening three points and never trailed. Bulgaria managed to level the score on a couple of occasions but untimely mistakes in attack doomed the home team. The Lionesses had just a 41% kill rate while also committing three serve errors.

● Aces by Lora Kitipova and Gergana Dimitrova, sandwiched by a monstrous spike by Elitsa Vasileva gave Bulgaria a four-point lead in the fourth set. A 5-0 run propelled the hosts to a convincing victory.

● In the second decider of the day in Plovdiv Germany left no doubts who is the better team on the court. The Mannschaft was ahead from start to finish led by middle blockers Marie Schoelzel and Camilla Weitzel with four points each.

● Louisa Lippmann was the top scorer for Germany with 18 points. Lina Alsmeier added 14.

"We are very happy that we managed to play that way in front of Bulgarian crowd. No matter who they root for, the atmosphere was really nice. Bulgaria has very tall attackers and blockers due to which sometimes it was hard for us to score. However, we are a very good team, we stick together, fight for each other which we again proved today. We didn't give up and stayed confident even when we lost those two sets. That was the key to the win!"

Louisa Lippmann
Opposite, Germany

"It was a tough match. We could have acted differently in some key moments in the first set. Germany put us in trouble mostly with their strong serve. Respectively, ours was not good enough and they were scoring easily. We learned our lessons from this match. We still have our chances to top Pool B which is our main goal."
