The year 2021, as per the words of Lubomir Ganev, former Volleyball star and now President of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, is the year of women’s Volleyball in the Balkan country. Ganev made such a statement during a press conference he attended at the iconic Kolodruma sports complex in Plovdiv ahead of this weekend’s CEV European Golden League matches, which account as a sort of ‘dress rehearsal’ ahead of the much anticipated CEV EuroVolley 2021.

“I am very happy that our summer adventure begins here in Plovdiv. We are looking forward to the Golden League Final Four tournament in Ruse. However, the climax of the 2021 season will come when EuroVolley 2021 Women takes place here in Plovdiv later this summer. I hope that by then, the pandemic will be over. The fans are our seventh player.”

“It will be a different feeling to play at home,” Bulgaria’s head coach Ivan Petkov said. “Our goal is to win the Golden League. After that, we will think about EuroVolley 2021.”

“We are hungry and looking forward to playing in front of our fans,” commented libero Zhana Todorova, who is at home in Plovdiv, since she is a player of local standout VC Maritza. “The people in Plovdiv love Volleyball. We wish to perform at our best in all of this weekend’s matches.”

Following the withdrawal of Finland from the competition, Bulgaria are due to play Ukraine and Slovakia in Plovdiv. Bulgaria currently lead the way in Pool B with two wins from as many matches they contested last week in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.

Later this summer, Bulgaria will embark on a EuroVolley campaign on home soil, playing the national teams of Poland, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic and Greece in Pool B.

Bulgaria’s best football player in history, Hristo Stoichkov, who is a native of Plovdiv, sent best wishes to the national team after speaking to Lubomir Ganev over the phone. Stoichkov is currently living in Miami, Florida.
