Throughout history, humanity has been captivated by the timeless tale of David and Goliath. This story has resonated with millions, offering inspiration and hope. Switzerland, who is participating in a European Championship for the first time in its history, is now ready to script a tale of its own.

The empathy for David

Enter Switzerland's national volleyball team, a squad that is trying to embody the essence of a true Cinderella story in the EuroVolleyM 23 tournament. Comprising players from mostly domestic clubs, this team is devoid of the star power often seen in top-level European clubs.

"Our ambition is to prove that  “little Switzerland can also compete internationally", Quentin Zeller says during the pre-game interviews.

Championing self-confidence

The Geneva native is a Swiss international and has been a key team support during the Swiss national team's strong European Championship qualifying campaign for Euro 2023. Under the guidance of head coach Mario Motta, the team has worked hard at the training base to be ready for the EuroVolley in Italy.

“EuroVolley is a dream come true for us. Five years ago, nobody would have imagined that this could be possible. Even in Europe, in other countries, other clubs, people are starting to consider Switzerland. But before, for us players who were abroad, there wasn't necessarily any respect for us. It's only gradually, with our very good staff, that we've managed to change people's attitudes.”

When the Swiss players stepped onto the EuroVolley 23 stage tonight versus Germany, they were venturing into uncharted territory. For most, performing in front of such a big audience and against some of the stars of the sport was a rare opportunity.

As the match got underway, the odds seemed stacked against Switzerland. To some outsiders, Swiss players do not seem to have the depth and quality to be able to play on an equal footing with their German rivals. The  game was an uphill battle for sure and Switzerland lost 0-3. But despite their limitations, they showcased the spirit of true champions.

This is why we hold a special place in our hearts for volleyball”, Zeller acknowledges. A team may lack financial resources, star players, top-level coaching, or other advantages. On paper, we might seem completely outmatched. However, on any given day, armed with a solid strategy and good teamwork, an underdog can cause an upset.

Quentin doesn't want to name any major sporting goals this week in Italy. Players simply want to build on the team's performance in the European Championship qualifiers and prove that "little Switzerland" has no need to hide internationally.

As we continue to observe Switzerland's journey in EuroVolleyM 23, let it serve as a reminder that, in the world of sports and beyond, belief in oneself can move mountains and create unforgettable Cinderella stories that inspire us all.
