Overview

Hosts Belgium finished second in Pool B on a record of four victories and one defeat. As a team, they have scored the most blocking points of the pool stage, together with Russia, 51 each. Individually, their captain Sam Deroo has not only been a great leader for his teammates and an inspiration to the home crowd on the stands, but also a consistent performer and the team’s best point-maker himself. Ukraine come into this match as the third-placed team in Pool D, where they claimed three wins and conceited two losses. Among the players to watch are Oleh Plotnytskyi, the tournament’s fourth best server with 12 aces to his name, Yurii Semeniuk, EuroVolley’s third best blocker and seventh most efficient spiker so far, and Dmytro Viietskyi, the team’s best scorer. The winner of this match will meet the winner of the match between Serbia and Czech Republic in a quarterfinal clash on September 24, again in Antwerp.

• Ukraine could suffer back-to-back straight set European Championship defeats for the first time since 2005, when they lost against Russia and Italy in the group stage.
• Only Nimir Abel-Aziz (24) from the Netherlands and Czech Republic's Jan Hadrava (21) scored more aces in this year's group stage than Oleh Plotnytskyi (12). Russia's Dmitrii Volkov also scored 12 aces.
• Dmytro Viietskyi was Ukraine's top scorer in the group stage on 64 points, three more than Plotnytskyi (61).

“Ukraine are a very powerful team, so we need to control the reception and the passing. After that we will see how they react.”

Lowie Stuer

“Belgium are a really great team and they play at home, so I expect a large crowd to support them. Our biggest weapons will be our character and our fighting spirit.”

Ukraine stun Belgium in five-set thriller

Article

Ukraine upset home favourites Belgium and a relentless crowd of 6,600 in Antwerp on Saturday, claiming a dramatic five-set victory to progress to Tuesday’s quarterfinal against Serbia.

With seven points each, Ian Iereshchenko and Dmytro Viietskyi helped Ukraine change the course of the first set and claim a 25-22 win. In the second set, the Ukrainians opened up a wide gap and things looked gloomy for the home team. But coach Brecht Van Kerckhove’s men mounted a spectacular comeback from 11-18 to 22-19, with subs Matthias Valkiers and Igor Grobelny behind the serving line. Opposite Bram Van den Dries, who replaced injured Hendrik Tuerlinckx for this match, scored seven times along the way to 25-21 set win. Captain Sam Deroo was well in charge as Belgium dominated the third set. He scored six points, including a sizzling ace for the last one of the set – 25-14. The fourth set was quite competitive through 16-16, but then the Ukrainians went on a powerful 9-2 run to take the set by 25-18 and prompt a decider. They were took control in the second half of the tie-break and triumphed victorious after Yurii Semeniuk’s monster block, which stopped the clocks at 15-10.

Ukraine’s Dmytro Viietskyi was the top scorer of the match on 23 points. Ian Iereshchenko added another 20, including four aces. Bram Van den Dries Was Belgium’s most prolific player, with 19 points to his name.

“I don’t know what happened to my team. According to the rankings, we were the favourites. And after our miraculous comeback in set two and a very strong third set, we had everything under control. And we had the crowd behind us. Yet, my team started doubting and I don’t know why. This loss is a big disappointment of course.”

Brecht Van Kerckhove
Coach of Belgium

“We did not play our level in serving and attack, but our fighting spirit came to the rescue. That’s the main reason for our victory.”
