Overview
Poland enters the eighth-finals having only lost 1 set in Pool D and placing first. The reigning world champions have a deep roster of talented players, including new addition Wilfredo Leon. Spain was the fourth-place team in Pool B, narrowly beating out Slovakia by beating Germany in their last match. Their leading scorer is Andres Villena, who had 90 points in the pool phase. The winner of this match will move onto the quarter-finals and play the winner of The Netherlands vs. Germany.
Head-to-head
- Poland have won each of their previous four European Championship matches against Spain.
- Their most recent European Championship encounter came in 2009, when Poland won in five sets in the second group stage. This was the first time Spain claimed a set against Poland in the European Championship.
- Poland could become the third team to win at least five European championship matches against Spain, after Germany (5, including as West Germany) and Serbia (5, including predecessors).
- Spain are already the opponents Poland have played most European Championship matches against without ever losing (4).
Poland
- Two-time reigning world champions Poland claimed eight podium finishes in the European championships - G1-S5-B2.
- After winning the European title in 2009, Poland finished in third (2011), ninth (2013), fifth (2015) and 10th place (2017).
- Poland have won each of their last four matches in straight sets, after winning their opening match of this year's European Championship 3-1 against Estonia. Poland could become the second country to claim five successive straight-set victories in the European Championship this century, after Russia in 2017.
- The last team to claim the European title with a maximum of one lost set was Netherlands in 1997. Only Yugoslavia avoided a straight-set defeat against Holland that campaign (3-1 loss in the final).
- Wilfredo Leon Venero (40%) had the third-best block efficiency in this year's group stage, behind Italy's Davide Candellaro (50%) and France's Stephen Boyer (44%).
Spain
- Spain won the European title in 2007, but finished in ninth (2009) and 16th place (2017) in their two participations since.
- Spain won their final two group stage matches 3-2 against Austria and 3-1 against Germany, ending an nine-match losing run in the competition.
- Spain can win more than two matches in a single European Championship for the third time, after 2005 (3) and 2007 (8).
- Andres Jesus Villena was Spain's top scorer in the group stage on 90 points, almost 40 points more than their next most prolific scorer (Juan Manuel Gonzalez, 51).
- Villena (90) scored the most points among all players in pool B in this year's European Championship.
Angel Trinidad"The key is just to enjoy the game. We know Poland is a really tough team to play against. Our main objective was to go through the pool phase. That is done, so now it is time to enjoy and do our best."

Match Report
Poland win 3-0 for the fifth time in a row against Spain
Article
21 September 2019
Poland needed 68 minutes to beat Spain in the eighth final of the European Championship. In the fully packed Omnisport stadium in Apeldoorn (6500 spectators) the team of head coach Vital Heynen defeated Spain 3-0. The atmosphere inside the stadium was fantastic; earplugs were necessary to survive the noise from the Polish crowd. The match itself was quite one-sided. Poland, with Wilfredo Leon (19 points) as the top scorer, had no significant problems with their Spanish opponent. By winning the eighth final, Poland already improved their result from #EuroVolley 2017, when they ended 10th in their own country. On Monday night in Apeldoorn, at 20:00 local time, Poland will meet Germany in the quarter-final.
