You can easily reach the venue by using public transportation. The two most convenient means include SKM trains which run regularly from all local directions (leave at Gdańsk Żabianka stop, then take a 10-minute walk down the Subisława and Rybacka streets) and ZTM trams (trams no. 2, 8, 6, 11 – leave at Gospody/Osiedle Wejhera stops, then follow the information boards). In order to get to ERGO ARENA straight from the airport, take the PKM train which has its stop at the airport, then change at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz stop and take the SKM train towards Gdańsk Żabianka. For fans, who are choosing to travel by car, we recommend the so-called Green Route which connects the venue with Grunwaldzka street/Niepodległości avenue – the main Gdańsk-Sopot road. Match Report

Poland crush Finland in straight sets progress to QFs

Article 11 September 2021

In the second eighth final match, at the Ergo Arena in Gdańsk, two of the co-host teams faced each other as Poland took on Finland. Polish players won all of the five matches of the pool A, qualifying through in first place, while Finland, playing at home in Tampere, finished in the fourth place of their pool.

The reigning World Champions were the clear favourites for this match and stepped into to game with great services performed by the outside hitter, Wilfredo Leon (8-3). The players, led by their head coach Vital Heynen, did not leave any room for doubt for Finland and headed towards an easy win in the opening part (19-12), which finally came true thanks to the attacks of the opposite, Łukasz Kaczmarek (25-16).

The players of Joel Banks’ team were not eager to give up without a fight and started the second set with a scoring point-for-point attitude (7-7). Close to the middle of the set Wilfredo Leon reminded his opponents of his great effectiveness in attack, immediately securing a five-points distance for his team (15-10). The last word in this part belonged to the middle blocker, Jakub Kochanowski (25-16).

The last part of today’s game, similarly to the previous ones, was a show of Poland’s dominance in every element (8-4). Team Suomi seemed not to have a solution how to defeat their rivals and was about to finish their journey at EuroVolley 2021 at the level of eight finals (18-11). A double block closed the match for a straight sets victory for Poland (25-14).

Poland’s quarter-final match will take place on Tuesday at the Ergo Arena against Russia, who earlier today defeated the team of Ukraine.

"It's amazing to play at a venue full of fans. The fans give us extra energy, so we always have to give everything in the game like this one. I think that we did our job, we progressed to the next phase, but now there are more difficult matches against opponents from the highest level, so we have to expect more resistance."

Paweł Zatorski
libero of Poland

"We did our best but they are a great team and today we didn't have a chance. I think that they are ahead of us in every element, they have higher standards in every component of the game. If we want to win games like this you have to play more against teams at the top level."

Niklas Seppanen
captain of Finland
