Overview

Defending EuroVolley champions in their last game of pool phase face the only winless team in Pool A - Greece. Serbia, currently ranked 2nd in the standings, recorded three wins so far and suffered one defeat in the clash against the hosts, losing after a thrilling five-setter. On Monday, playing against Portugal (3-1), coach Slobodan Kovac gave an opportunity to play to almost all his players, rotating with the squad. We can expect that he might repeat this move. On the other side, Greece is still seeking their chance to earn a win, especially that so far only Poland and Serbia secured their spots in the eight finals and all four teams are still in the quest for two remaining tickets to the next phase.

Match Report

Serbia find form when it matters in tie-break

Article

In their last match in pool A, Serbian players faced a so far winless Greece. A win would take Serbia to the top of the group, but with Poland still to play their last game it was not all in their control. At the other end of the standing was Greece who needed to win both of their last matches to stand any chance of being included in the four who will progress to the Eighth Finals in Gdansk.

The first set started with Slobodan Kovac’s players dominating across the net, and they immediately built a five point advantage (6-1). The Hellas seemed not to have any solution for the well-prepared Serbians (18-12), but quite unexpectedly in the end of the set the difference decreased to just two points (22-20). Eventually Serbia took the opening part with an attack from Petar Krsmanović (25-23). The increased competitiveness of Greece was a sign of things to come.

The second part was tight straight from the beginning. Greece even managed to lead the match for the first time (6-5) and then increased it to four points (12-8). Throughout this part Serbia was trying to chase the opponent (21-17), but without success and finally lost this set to 22 points.

After this set loss, the current champions were strongly motivated to fight back and successfully took revenge on the national team of Greece, among the others due to fantastic serves of the middle blocker Aleksandar Okolić (25-16).

The fourth part of this game was again a show of good rallies by both teams (16-16), Greece’s best scorer, Athanasios Protopsaltis, did his best to force the game into the tie-break and after a few failed attempts it happened – first forcing the ball through the Serbian block at the net, before producing an un-returned serve to make it 30-28.

The Serbians opened the fifth set of the match by securing a significant advantage (9-4), which in consequence drove them on to victory not only in this set, but in the whole game as well (15-5).

""We know that if you want to win the match at EuroVolley you have to suffer. Even Poland lost one set in the match against Greece. Greece is a good team, they didn't make too many mistakes. Maybe we were a bit too relaxed and for our opponents the next match is in or out, but now we have to think about the next four days how we can improve our game."

Aleksandar Atanasijevic
opposite of Serbia

"It was a very hard battle against European champions, so for us it was the best opportunity to see if we are able to reach this level. It was very important for us that we won two sets and we got one point. This point brings us hope ahead of tomorrow's match against Portugal."

Athanasios Protopsaltis
