Match Report

BELARUS v CZECH REPUBLIC

Article 4 September 2021

In Saturday´s second match in Ostrava, the Czech Republic played on their home court, Ostravar Arena ,against Belarus, who lost 0:3 to Italy in its opening performance. Although the home players were again helped by their fans, the Czech Republic was unable to repeat Friday's victory and it was Belarus who took three match points.

At the beginning of the match, the Belarusians took the lead 7:4, but the Czech Republic immediately reacted and turned to 7:9 (during the serve of Jakub Janouch). But it was Belarus again who added points (13:11, 16:12) and Jiří Novák took time out. After that, Jan Galabov scored two aces in a row (18:15) but the Czech team could no longer turn the set and Belarus won 25:20.

The second set was first balanced (5:5) but the great fans in Ostravar Arena helped the Czech players and after a direct point from serve of Jan Hadrava the home team lead 6:8. Lukáš Vašina scored in the attack, Jan Galabov added another two aces and it was already a five-point lead 7:12. Belarus took  a time out and corrected the score to 10:12. But the Czech volleyball players fought for every ball, increased their lead again (11:17) and finally won the set 19:25.

Belarus dominated the third set the whole time. The Czech Republic had opportunities to equalize the score (9:8, 17:15) but did not manage to. The fourth set was similar, Belarus put the Czech Republic under pressure and won the whole match 3:1 without any problems.

Jakub Janouch, captain of the Czech Republic: „Today it was probably bad in our heads, Belarus of course played well, compared to yesterday a few levels higher and unfortunately we made mistakes. The tournament continues so we have to leave it behind us quickly because we will play another match in less than 20 hours. We need to regenerate as best we can and prepare for tomorrow."

Viktar Beksha, head coach of Belarus: „Today we were able to attack quickly and effectively and we also did well on the block and in defense, especially in the key moments. Very important for the development of the match was winning the first set, the players calmed down. We have a young team here and the players need to be trusted. Yesterday's loss woke them up correctly.“
