Overview

The CEV #EuroVolleyM 2021 starts today: Finland and North Macedonia meet in the Pool C first match.

It is the third time in history that Finland plays host to EuroVolley and the first time together with other countries.
Finland and North Macedonia are part of Pool C alongside Russia, Turkey, the Netherlands, and Spain. They met just once before, in their opening match in the 2019 edition of the EuroVolley, in Ljubljana, where the Finnish won 3-1.
Both are determined to win since host Finland is driven by its fans, while North Macedonia can rely on its fighting spirit.

Both teams are going to fight until the end, and the match is going to be spectacular!

Match Report

Finland start EuroVolley home campaign in emphatic style

Article 1 September 2021

With some 2,400 fans coming together at Hakametsä Arena, hosts Finland started their EuroVolley journey with a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 25-22) over North Macedonia in a repeat of another such match contested two years ago – which had finished with the very same result. Actually, Finland had an opportunity to finish the match in three sets only – but they failed to capitalise on a match ball at the end of the third set, where North Macedonia fought valiantly to stay in the game.

Actually, North Macedonia caught a very promising start to the match, leading for most of the time in the opening set, where the Finns looked a bit nervous, despite the very energetic atmosphere contributed by their fans. Finland rose to the occasion and broke away slowly but surely (16-15, 21-17) to eventually close the first set 25-20 on as many as eight points scored by their opposite hitter Urpo Sivula. History repeated itself in the second set where Finland made up for a relatively slow start to turn the score around from 4-6 to 7-6 before edging ahead at 15-10 – and finishing the set on a cushion of as many as 10 points (25-15). The atmosphere was a bit ‘hot’ on the court as North Macedonia’s outside hitter Aleksandar Ljaftov received a red card at 17-14 for the Finns.

Finland seemed to have found a way to neutralise their opponent’s most lethal weapon, Nikola Gjorgiev, and set the pace in the third set – but North Macedonia valiantly fought back as they cancelled a match point for the Finns and extended the match to a fourth set. Despite this setback, Finland regrouped very well and did not lose composure at all – with Sivula heavily contributing to their 3-1 victory after registering a personal tally of 25 points.

“We did not play such a match for a long time, since the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of all competitions and earlier this summer we only had 3 friendly matches. This is obviously a good start to a competition on home soil. We feel the energy of this crowd and have very good memories from this arena – where we played many matches and achieved much success in the World League a few years ago. We want to win as many matches as possible but enjoy the experience – just one game at a time.”
