The Netherlands start EuroVolley campaign with 3-0 victory

Article 2 September 2021

Superstar Nimir Abdel-Aziz helped the Netherlands claim a comprehensive 3-0 victory over a gutsy Spain to start their campaign in Pool C on a high note. All three sets were close, but the Orange team came out on top in each of them (25-23, 26-24, 25-22). More than 1,000 fans witnessed three sets of good Volleyball at Hakametsä Arena in Tampere. Nimir Abdel-Aziz showed his great skills, especially in the most crucial moments, scoring 19 points, including three aces.

Back in 2007, in the last EuroVolley matchup between Spain and the Netherlands, the Spaniards had secured a 3-1 victory and only 5 days later they claimed a historic European Championship title.

Spain were smelling already victory in the first set of today’s match, as they edged ahead towards the end (23-21), before the Dutchmen fought back and scored four points in a row (25-23).

The Netherlands broke away in the middle of the second set and seemed to cruise towards an easy victory (24-21). However, Spain fought their way back before Robbert Andringa recorded an ace to double the Dutch lead in the match (26-24).

Spain won a challenge to remain in contention in the third set but the Dutch side showed their experience and went on to win the third set too. Nimir Abdel-Aziz finished the match with a blistering service winner.

“It was a very close match indeed but I think that we made the difference by claiming a small advantage in each set, mainly courtesy of our service game. Turkey beat Russia earlier today and this may be a surprise for sure – but this is the European Championship and anything can happen here. Our first and main goal is to make it out of this pool in the best possible way and after that, we hope to make it as far as we possibly can in this tournament.”
