Bosnia and Herzegovina qualify for EuroVolley 2021

Article 15 May 2021

Bosnia and Herzegovina took the second qualifying spot in women’s EuroVolley 2021 from Pool F after a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-11) shutout of Latvia on Saturday in Zenica. With one day to go, the hosts are on a 3-2 win-loss record and 10-6 in sets and are no longer reachable in the runner-up position in the standings.

Only for a brief moment during the first set, at 10-10, Latvia managed to catch up with Bosnia and Herzegovina on the scoreboard. Delivering the points in offence, the home team were otherwise well in control towards a 25-20 win, fixed by Edina Begic with a spike in the middle. The Bosnian blocking and serving also started bringing in some points in the second set and the team’s prevalence was even more emphatic. The set ended at 25-15, after setter Milana Bozic surprised the Latvians with a tricky tip on second touch. In a completely one-sided third set, Edina Selimovic hammered one of her three aces in the match to produce the winner and close the match at 25-11.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s captain Edina Begic was the best scorer of the match with 14 points to her name. Serbian super star Tijana Boskovic, native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, attended the game and handed the MVP trophy to Begic at the end.

Pavels Selivanovs, head coach of Latvia: "There is a difference in the physical condition and the abilities between the Bosnian team and our team. As a coach, I am satisfied with the performance of my team. We have been together for a short period of time and it is hard to expect that a lot can be done. I hope we have chosen the right path."

Stevan Ljubicic, head coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina: "I am overjoyed, first of all, because of these girls. We have been working in this atmosphere since the first day, and here is how we finished and won a place at the European Championship. I would like to thank all the people who were with us, first of all President Alija Fatic, all the people from the federation, the entire Bosnian public for their full support, the city of Zenica, the city of Kakanj... I am overjoyed, but this is just the beginning. The beautiful story continues..."
