Bulgaria started in a perfect way in the competition, as in the opening match of #EuroVolleyW, disappointed the team of Greece at 3-0. Considered pool favourites together with Poland, Bulgaria aim high at this edition of Europe’s most elite competition, and will for sure look for a clear win over the Spanish players.
Both teams have recently each other play, at the Golden #EuroLeagueW Final Four, but didn’t lock horns in the semifinals. Bulgaria grabbed the Gold, while Spain fought hard against the Czech Republic and claimed the bronze.

On Saturday, Bulgaria will count on the support of their loyal fans in sports hall “Kolodruma”, Plovdiv.

Bulgaria maintains perfect record after a short work of Spain

Article 21 August 2021

Bulgaria maintained a perfect record in Pool B after a routine 3-0 win in less than half an hour over Spain in its second match of EuroVolley 2021 Women. And while The Lionesses bolstered their chances to progress to the Round of 16 Spain is still winless after two rounds of play.

● Bulgaria jumped to a 7-3 lead in the first set aided by a couple of timely video challenges by head coach Ivan Petkov and opponents errors. Spain never came closer than two points and on the strength of excellent serving by Elitsa Vasileva and Eva Yaneva (playing for the national team after a four-year absence) The Lionesses managed a whopping 8 break points winning the set in just 21 minutes making it the most lopsided in Pool B so far. Bulgarians had an amazing 67% success rate in attack compared to just 28% for the Spaniards.

● Head coach Pascual Saurin tried to turn things around Elia Rodriguez started as a setter for Spain in set 2 replacing Maria Alvarez but to no avail. Bulgaria once again led from start to finish. Despite the dip in form midway through the set, which allowed Spain to cut the deficit to just two points, the home team prevailed once again.

● In the third set Bulgarian head coach Ivan Petkov almost emptied the bench playing mainly backups. That didn’t change much on the court as aces by Yaneva, Gergana Dimitrova and Emiliya Dimitrova gave the home team a five-point lead. And after missing its first two match points Bulgaria got a huge spike from Hristina Vuchkova to close out the win.

“It’s important for us to win every match. To give our best as a team. There’s no difference who is our opponent. We respect every team. For every match we prepare as for a final. Spain is a well-organized team with quality players. But they are not that experienced and it was a big disadvantage for them. We had our difficult moments but that’s unavoidable.”

Ivan Petkov
Head Coach, Bulgaria

“We expected more resistance from Spain but it’s nice to finish with an easy win. We were fresher and played with fewer mistakes. Regarding the dip in concentration it’s our fault as Spain dragged our level down. For the match against Germany our goal is to win convincingly.”

Gergana Dimitrova
Outside spiker, Bulgaria

"I am very happy not only for the win but also for the good job done today. It's an important step for getting closer to the next stage. To be back on the court and on home soil made me feel really excited. Our fans are just incredible. Hopefully, we will keep on with the same winning energy against Germany tomorrow."

Eva Yaneva
Outside spiker, Bulgaria

"We made a lot of mistakes today which are not usual. We were not focused enough especially in the first two sets. Fortunately, we managed to deliver a bit better in the third one. Still, such matches are very useful for the improvement of our young team."

Maria Segura Palleres
Captain, Spain
