Bulgaria enter the match  after a loss from the team of Germany. The Bulgarian Lionesses are currently second placed in Pool B, after pool leader Poland who remain unbeaten.

Head coach Ivan Petkov might count on top scorers from the match against Germany, Gergana Dimitrova (19) and Emiliya Dimitrova (18).

Czechia, on the other hand, are currently third placed in Pool B, but have one more match than Germany, who are fourth. On Monday, they won in three sets against the team of Greece after a cat-and-mouse game. Gabriela Orvosova finished as top scorer with 22 points to her name, and might cause serious problems to the Bulgarian block-defence.

Bulgaria’s impressive win sets up a clash with Poland for the top spot in Pool B

Article 24 August 2021

Bulgaria scored an impressive 3-0 victory over Czech Republic to set up a clash for the top spot in Pool B with Poland. Meanwhile Czech Republic finished pool play with a 2-3 record and will face Turkey on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals.

● Backup setter Petya Barakova started for Bulgaria but that made little difference in the first. The home team led by six points midway through it when the Czechs went on a 10-2 run before squandering a set point. Three excellent spikes in a row by Gergana Dimitrova (six points in total in the set) won it for Bulgaria.

● The Lionesses played an impeccable second set save for a couple of serve errors and a backcourt fault by Emiliya Dimitrova. The hosts were excellent on block (five points) and defense, limiting Czech Republic to just 11% kill rate.

● A successful video challenge by Czech Republic head coach Ioannis Athanasopolous prolonged the match by a couple of minutes but with an emphatic spike on the third match point closed the deal for Bulgaria.

● Gergana Dimitrova became top scorer with 14 points. Nasya Dimitrova, Emiliya Dimitrova and Elitsa Vasileva added 12 each. No Czech player finished in double figures in scoring.

"We are happy but we have to control our emotions now. It was tough for us. Our thoughts were probably on the match against Poland tomorrow. The good thing is that we managed to get over the weak moments. Our main goal now is to be prepared for the team of Poland."

Ivan Petkov
Head coach, Bulgaria

"The main goal today was to control our emotions after the loss against Germany. We knew that the start is going to be hard. We are already a bit tired and we had to save as much energy as possible. We expect a great battle against Poland. We will give our best and will fight until the end."

Elitsa Vasileva
Captain, Bulgaria

"We played a good first set and it was a matter of luck not winning it. Still, Bulgaria has a very good team and, unfortunately, we didn't manage to put them in trouble. Now we have time to rest a bit and to prepare for Turkey. We have to be very concentrated."

Andrea Kossanyiova
Captain, Czech Republic
