Overview

This can be a crucial match, as both teams have a chance to progress to the next round and victory in this encounter can be decisive for their fate. As many as four teams in Pool C have exactly the same record of one win and three losses, but Hungary is one point ahead of the rest. For them it's also the last game in the preliminary round, so the result of this game is extremely important for the team. On the other side of the court, Belarus, who played their first two games against the favourites of Pool C - Italy and Croatia, earned emphatic win over Switzerland and hope to stay on a right track, as on Thursday they will play against Slovakia. So with no doubt, both teams will be extremely motivated, fighting for every ball and we can expect a thrilling battle.

Match Report

Belarus come from behind to claim spot in knockout phase

Article 25 August 2021

This was a very important match for both teams, since a win meant the qualification for the second round and more specifically for the 8th finals.

Belarus were in a slightly more favourable position in the early stages of the match and when they had an 8-5 lead, it seemed they would push the advantage even further, but Hanna Klimets, the best player of the first set, made a mistake from the service line and the point went to the Hungarians. Belarus edged ahead again at 15-12, but they did not manage to keep the advantage, so Hungary turned the score around at 20-19 and with the help of an ace by Anett Nemeth and two more points by Gréta Szakmary, they won the first set 25-20.

The Hungarians had no problem winning the second set too, and they did so by a landslide 25-14. Belarus coach Stanislav Salikov checked his bench, trying to find replacements, but it did not quite work as Hungary remained in full control. They did not make a single mistake serving or at serve reception in the first two sets. The only points they gave away were from their just three unforced errors.

Only when setter Anastasiya Kananovich, together with middle blocker Nadzeya Vladyka and outside spiker Vera Kastsiuchyk entered the game, did Belarus regroup to win the third set 25-16. They kept the lead during the fourth set as well (18-12, 21-15), but the Hungarians managed to grab their tail and almost evened it out at 23-22. However, Belarus kept it together and won the fourth set 25-23 to go for a decider.

Belarus kept their cool throughout the tiebreaker as well and managed to win the game 3-2. Hats down to a team that came back from 0-2 to take an all-important victory!

“I am incredibly happy with this victory, which is so important for our team. The emotions are just running high. I think I played one of the best matches in my career and I am grateful to the other girls and the coaches for all their help and support. This success really means a lot to me. It feels great to be playing here against such top teams – and we are extremely happy with this opportunity.”

Hanna Davyskiba
Player of Belarus

"It's women's Volleyball. I don't know what happened. We came back, we fought until the end. So what I can say it's that I'm really proud of my team. I think that the way we started the third set was decisive. There is a longer break after the second set and we don't like this break, we needed two and half sets to come back to the rhythm. At the end of the fourth set we fought so good, but we were a bit unlucky today."
