Overview

The seventh day of Pool D starts in explosive fashion due to the highly anticipated group blockbuster that sees team Netherlands face team Turkey. The two teams are top of the group hosted by the BT Arena and this match has high stakes for both teams, as it will determine who wins the group. So far, Turkey’s offensive play has been devastating, but today they will face one of the best receivers in the tournament so far, in the person of Myrthe Schoot. The clash over the net will be fierce, as both teams have high block percentages so far. It remains to be seen who will emerge victorious: the dutch lionesses or the Sultans of the net?

Match Report

A three set victory gives Turkey the first position in the standings of Pool D

Article

Volleyball fans from all over the world were up for a treat tonight, as the first match in Pool D was the blockbuster of the group: The mighty Sultans of the net against the Dutch lionesses. The game started in an impressive manner, with team Netherlands starting strong. For a while, Turkey did not know how to react to the violent play of the Dutch team, but after some tactical tweaks by coach Guidetti, they have shown their status of group favourites with an impressive display by Ebrar Karakurt. A dominating late set performance both in attack and defence has given Turkey the first set.The second set started in the same fashion, with Netherlands leading the game up to a point, when Turkey’s players decided to step in and attack. At one point during set 2, Turkey’s winning spikes count was 2 times higher than the Netherlands. Eda Erdem’s play has been on point, leading the team like a true captain does. No chances slipped by team TUR, who finished the second set in the same fashion. The third set was closer than the first two, but the Netherlands did not manage to win any set. The derby of the group finishes with Turkey winning 5 games from 5 possible and going into the next phase with maximum points. The Netherlands are sure of second place. It has been a very exciting game in Cluj-Napoca!
