Match Report

Belgium please home crowd with straight-set victory

Article

Cheered on by a fantastic crowd of supporters of both sides, doing the Mexican wave together and enjoying the Volleyball party at Paleis 12, Belgium and Austria offered them a good game, in which the home side emerged with a straight-set victory.

While in the first and the third sets Belgium were clearly in control of the scoreboard, in the second, Austria put on a fight and the home side had to survive a late Austrian comeback scare at 21-21 and 22-22 to persevere for the set win and keep a clean sheet.

Belgium's Hendrik Tuerlinckx and Austria's Thomas Zass and Alexander Berger shared the top-scoring honours of the match with 11 points apiece, while Thomas Rousseaux put away four of the home squad’s seven stuff blocks that made the biggest difference in this game. Other than when hosting the finals in 1999 and 2011, this was Austria's first EuroVolley appearance since 1971.

“This is a tough loss. We didn’t expect this scoreline. We didn’t manage to keep our service at top level. We focused our game on the Belgian setter, but he was too good today. In the end, we have to admit, there was a substantial difference in quality. Saturday’s match against Slovakia will be an all-or-nothing game.”

Peter Wohlfahrtstätter
Captain of Austria

“This was a good way to start, because it’s going to be a long tournament. With this 3-0 we did our job without spending too much energy. Only our block-defence combination could have been a little better.”

Sam Deroo
Captain of Belgium
