Overview

Hosts Slovenia will try to carry the momentum from their decisive win over Bulgaria into the quarterfinal match against favourites Russia. They can rely on their faithful crowd of fans for support against the most dominant team in Ljubljana. Dimitrii Volkov (4th best server in the final tournament so far) and Klemen Cebulj excelled in their last matches against Greece and Bulgaria, respectively.

Head-to-head

  • Russia and Slovenia also faced each other in this year's EuroVolley group stage. Russia won 3-0 in Ljubljana on 18 September. Dmitrii Volkov and Victor Poletaev scored 13 points for Russia, while Toncek Stern (8) was Slovenia's top scorer in this match.

  • Russia have won all four matches against Slovenia at EuroVolley and never lost a set.

  • The closest Slovenia came to winning a set, or the match, against Russia at EuroVolley was in the group stage in 2017. Slovenia lost the first two sets in that match 27-25 and 30-28. Russia won the third set 25-22.

  • Russia beat Slovenia 3-0 in the EuroVolley quarter-finals in 2017. Maxim Mikhailov (13) and Tine Urnaut (12) were their team's top scorers in that match.

Russia

  • Defending champions Russia are hoping to claim a record extending 15th European title (including titles won as Soviet Union). Italy (6) are the only other nation to have won more than three European trophies.

  • The last team to win the EuroVolley in back-to-back editions were Italy in 2003-2005. Soviet Union won nine European titles in a row from 1967 to 1987.

  • Russia have won 21 of their last 22 EuroVolley matches, including all six in this year's edition. The only exception in that run was a straight-set defeat against Italy in the 2015 quarter-finals.

  • Russia can win 13 EuroVolley matches in a row for the first time since a run of 36 wins from 1979 to 1989.

  • Dmitrii Volkov scored 18 points for Russia in their 3-0 win against Greece in the eight finals. He was also his team's top scorer in the group phase on 59 points.

Slovenia

  • Slovenia are aiming for their second podium in a EuroVolley tournament, after a second place in 2015. They lost the 2015 final in straight sets against France.

  • Slovenia won their opening three group stage matches in this year's EuroVolley, before losing against both North Macedonia (3-1) and defending champions Russia (3-0). They returned to winning ways by beating Bulgaria 3-1 in the eight finals.

  • Slovenia could win five matches at a single EuroVolley tournament for the first time.

  • Klemen Cebulj was Slovenia's top scorer against Bulgaria (3-1) in the eight finals on 17 points. He scored six aces in that win.

  • Tine Urnaut (74) is Slovenia's leading scorer in this year's EuroVolley.

"Slovenia are a great team and they will play with great will of revenge for the last match. I think service and reception will be the key elements to this game"

Tuomas Sammelvuo
head coach (RUS)

"This is crazy. I was dreaming about this and I knew one day it will happen. We have the best fans in the world. I cannot describe all my feelings. We left our hearts on the court, we did everything to win this game. We are going for the gold."

Jan Kozamernik
middle-blocker (SLO)

"Sure I believe in these guys, because I know them very well. This evening against Russia we played unbelievably well on attack, on serve. Together with these magic supporters, it is difficult for the opponent teams to win against us."

Alberto Giuliani
head coach (SLO)
Alberto Giuliani (SLO)

"These are interesting sporting moments, when you win easily the previous game and then the next game is always a war from the opening on. We knew perfectly that they will serve very very well. I have to congratulate Slovenian team, they played a great game, they attacked very well their high balls, not in our block but searching different angles, and on the other hand we had many problems with our attack in the first two sets. Today they were a lot better."

Tuomas Sammelvuo
head coach (RUS)

"First set was important. We played point by point and we had four or five situations in which we made mistakes and gave chance to Slovenian team who took adventage of them. It was difficult to change the game. Before the game we were the favorites and that was pressure for us. Slovenian fans gave crazy energy to their team and they were better thanks to that."
