Match Report

Finland celebrate their first EuroVolley triumph in 42 years

Article

Finland secured their second EuroVolley victory in history – and their first such success in 42 years, where they beat West Germany in 1977 on home soil. This result makes sure that they are still in contention for a spot in the next round of the competition.

Salla Karhu top scored with 19 points for the Finns, as Suvi Kokkonen added another 14 to contribute to such historic victory. Finland’s middle blocker Roosa Helena Laakkonen accounted for four of her team’s five blocks.

The match was a setback for France, who earlier in the tournament sensationally beat Bulgaria. Les Bleues have one victory to their name and two points after four matches in the pool.

Day 5 Recap

Play

“It feels amazing to finally claim a victory at EuroVolley. I think we played very well in the previous matches too, we just did not win but now it feels extremely good! We prepared the same way as for the other games but I think that today we were more aggressive and that is why we won the game. We are going to do the same for the next game. We are ready to play and we know we can win. Obviously, after this win we are feeling more confident.”

Salla Karhu
Top scorer of Finland

Nina Stojiljkovic, setter of France: “To be honest, at the beginning we did not have a definite goal for this competition. We tried to enjoy the moment because we are competing again at EuroVolley after a long time. Maybe this was an important game for the ranking but I am more disappointed about our game and with the way we played. It is frustrating because we did not play our best game. Our serve was not efficient.

We still have one more game to enjoy. Maybe we felt some extra pressure today. It is a pity to win against Bulgaria and then lose the following matches 3-0, 3-1. We started very euphorically and we thought that maybe we could achieve something. However, this is our first EuroVolley for quite some time and that put a lot of pressure on us.”
