Match Report

Greece ride the wave of success to claim second victory in a row

Article

After waiting for 27 years to celebrate their first EuroVolley triumph since the 1991 edition held in Italy, Greece made it back-to-back wins as they edged Finland to follow up on Saturday’s success against France. Anthi Vasilantonaki and Olga Strantzali scored 27 and 22 times, respectively, to contribute to this victory, which opens the door to the elimination round for the Hellenic team.

After losing 16 straight matches at EuroVolley, Greece have now won two in a row – just as they did in 1991 when they beat France and Albania in Ravenna.

As with Saturday’s matchup with Turkey, Finland showed a very good blocking game, registering 13 stuffs, but none in the fourth and final set of this fixture. Finland failed to cash two set points in the fourth set, which would have taken the match to a tiebreaker. Despite their loss, Finland scored more points than Greece in the match – 95 vs. 93.

Day 3 Recap

Play

“We are very excited because this game was like a final in our quest to reach the next round. We deserved this victory and I am very happy with it. Tomorrow we will have time to rest a little bit. Our next game against Bulgaria will be difficult because they are a strong team but I hope we will perform just as we did today, as we never lost focus. We want to do our best.”

Styliani Christodoulou
Captain and setter of Greece

Krista Michaela Bjerregård Madsen, player of Finland: “Greece got better after the second set. Their reception got better, they showed more tricks and they served harder. We had some troubles but I think overall, we played quite well as a team. I am extremely proud of my girls. Maybe we lost a little bit of focus or maybe the other side just had a little bit more. That is how we lost a couple of balls in a row. We were not able to get back fast enough. The ends of the sets were close.

We have one day to prepare for the France match. It is an extremely important one for us. We will rest and prepare. We are going to give everything as we do with every game.”
