Italy beat Poland in bronze medal game to secure first EuroVolley podium finish in 10 years
After losing to Serbia in the semis, Italy claimed the bronze medal match after defeating Poland 3-0. This accounts for Italy’s first EuroVolley medal since seizing gold in 2009. It increases Italy’s EuroVolley tally to 7 medals – with gold from the 2007 and 2009 editions to go with silver in 2001 and 2005, and 2 more bronze medals claimed in 1989 and 1999.
The ‘Azzurre’ made up for the 2-3 loss they suffered at the hands of Poland in the last match of the pool phase in Lodz. Italy edged their opponents courtesy of a 53% success rate in attack.
Paola Egonu was the top scorer of the match with 23 points. Malwina Smarzek-Godek scored 15 times for Poland.
It was the 16th EuroVolley match between Italy and Poland since the inaugural tournament held in 1949. With today’s victory, the head-to-heads stand now at eight victories apiece.

Cristina Chirichella, captain of Italy: “After losing yesterday, we are obviously very happy with this result. It was our goal to play the final. We won the bronze medal and this is not too bad, since we are growing together day by day. As we are such a young team, this can be a start point for more to come.”
Agnieszka Kakolewska“I think the first game against Italy was completely different. I think that both teams have improved the quality of their performance since the start of the tournament. I think that overall, we did a good job at this EuroVolley. We started well in the group phase and we won difficult matches against Italy and Germany, but we lost the most important ones here in Ankara. Therefore, it is difficult to say much after a game like that.”
