Match Report

ROMANIA v SWITZERLAND

Article

Switzerland climbed to second place in the pool after a thrilling win in five sets over hosts Romania at Ploiesti, after twice coming back from a set down to dominate the tie-break.

The points that Switzerland dropped, though means they can no longer challenge Slovakia, even in theory, for first place in the standings.

The Swiss win came on the back of 21 points by Luca Ulrich, though Rares Balean was top scorer of the game on 23.

Romania dominated the blocking, producing 17 stuffs (to Switzerland's 11) - nine of them from Razvan Mihalcea. But Switzerland controlled the ball much better than the hosts in reception.

Mario Motta, head coach of Switzerland: “I love this team because it was not so easy to come back from the deficit that we had in the fourth set. We trailed by many points there, so I appreciate the effort and I am happy with it. This is what I care the most about; everything else does not really matter.”

Samuel Ehrat, middle blocker and captain of Switzerland: “We are happy to win this game. It was a tough match and Romania played very well. We are happy because we fought back; the fourth set was especially a big fight and the team showed their character there. I think it is a big strength of ours to be able to fight as much as we did and we are obviously happy with the victory.”

Danut Pascu, head coach of Romania: “It is a tough loss and we are very sorry that we missed the qualification to EuroVolley. We were very bad in reception and this obviously had a negative impact on our performance. We have a national team composed of young players, since there is generation change happening. Some of them do not have enough experience, but they have to learn, especially because from mistakes they learn more than from successes.”
