Overview

Greece lost their opening match at EuroVolley 2021 to Ukraine after a tough five-set battle on Thursday. Their outside hitter Athanasios Protopsaltis has already shown his potential and with his teammates they hope to challenge Belgium, being at full strength after one day of rest. Belgium will be even more eager to recover after suffering two losses, as they were beaten by the defending champion Serbia (3-1) on Thursday, and then suffered an unexpected defeat from Portugal in tie-break. But Sam Deroo & co. will definitely try to banish memories from the first two games and show their teeth to grab a first win.

Match Report

Belgium take first win to stay in hunt

Article 4 September 2021

Opening Day 3 in pool A, saw the national team of Greece face the team of Belgium. Until now neither team had won a match after Greece were defeated by Ukraine and Belgium by Portugal and Serbia. They were even equal on ranking points as they had both achieved a single point after taking one match to a tie-break. In this game however they were not quite equal, as Belgium put together a game that proved to be too much for the Greek side in most departments of the game.

The first set of the match was completely dominated by the side in red, push on by their coach Fernando Benitez Munoz. They secured a small advantage quite early (6-3) and throughout the set just built up a more significant lead (15-6). The coach of Greece tried a number of substitutions, but the Belgians seemed to be just unstoppable and easily ended the opening part 25-16.

The second part was completely different from the first one. The score was tied through the early phases (7-7), and this did not change until the twenties (19-19). This was partly due to a good performance from the Greek middle blocker Theodoros Voulkidis, who contributed with an ace and multiple effective attacks. In the end it turned out not to be enough to defeat the players of Belgium, who won also the second set to 22 points.

The Belgians were heavily motivated to finish the match in three sets, which led to immediate securing of a tactical few-points advantage (15-10). The Greeks tried to bring the game back level, especially their best scorer Nikos Zoupani, who contributed with as many as 19 points, but the team of Belgium were fully concentrated on winning its first match of the tournament and finally triumphed in the third 25-22.

"We made a better start than during the two previous days, we immediately put a lot of pressure with our serve and we had a good reception and then our setter could play everything. There was a lot of pressure, we knew that this was our last chance, because losing this game would mean being out of the tournament."

Wout D'Heer
middle blocker of Belgium

"All the teams here fight to qualify for the next round, we knew that we had to play !00% to win this game, but Belgium played really good today. We had an opportunity to take one set, but they started again to play much better. We missed our power. Tomorrow is another difficult game but we will continue fighting."

Georgios Petreas
captain of Greece
