Overview

Portugal and Serbia will lock horns trying to recover after suffering defeats in their previous encounters. Portugal had only one win to their name (after defeating Belgium in five-set), suffering on Sunday upset in a tough five-setter against Ukraine. Portugal's main powerguns are brothers Ferreira - Alex and Marco along with middle blocker Filip Cveticanin. But Serbia is definitely a favourite of this encounter. The defending champions battled with Poland on Saturday, losing in tie-break in the full house in Kraków, so now they will be eager to show their full strength again, being headed by Uros Kovacevic who is currently the best scorer of the tournament with 62 points.

Match Report

Serbia do the business over Portuguese

Article 6 September 2021

With Serbia losing in the tie break to the co-hosts Poland and Portugal losing against Ukraine in their last respective matches, the first game on Day 6 at the Tauron Arena in Krakow saw two teams determined to get their EuroVolley ventures back on track.

Coach Slobodan Kovac made a few changes to freshen up the European Champions from 2019, but there was still plenty of talent, power and experience out there – despite missing Captain Nemanja PETRIC through injury.  While Portugal retained more of their team from previous matches, captain Alexandre Ferreira was missing this time around. After a tight beginning, Serbia finally managed to secure a reasonable advantage and eventually won the set quite easily (25-15).

The second set of the game sped to a three-points advantage to Serbia (5-2).  Portugal did their best to try and bring it back level, but the Serbian side were determined to push on (18:14). The victory in this set became a fact after an effective attack of Dražen Luburić (25-21).

The Portuguese players refused to give up, despite the first two sets loss.  They started the third set by asking for a video challenge straight after the first action. The players from the the West of Europe were strongly motivated to push the match into a fourth set and built a four points advantage for the first time (13-9) and followed this through to take the set to 22 points.

After the loss in the third set, the European Champions came back with a renewed focus and gradually build an advantage (18:12), similar to the opening set.   From here there was only one winner and the Serbian side made it to the end without any serious problems (25-17).

The top scorers from each team were Dražen Luburić (18 points) from Serbia and Lourenco Martins (15 points) for Portugal.

"Today, we - players who didn't play so far - got an opportunity to enter the court. It was this kind of the match when we could try different solutions and to give all players a chance. We lost the third set, but then we returned to the court motivated and gave our best. It's an important win for us, because with this victory we sealed our spot in the next round. There is one more game ahead of us against Greece and we expect another win. "

Vuk Todorovic
setter of Serbia

"We played against the defending European champions, so everything we managed to do is a bonus. We just enjoy the opportunity to play at this level against one of the best teams in the world - it's amazing for us. We need more opportunities like this to keep growing and improving the level of our team. When we spike in Portugal we usually score, but with their block and so big players, we have to find different solutions."

Miguel Tavares
setter of Portugal
