You can easily reach the venue by using public transportation. The two most convenient means include SKM trains which run regularly from all local directions (leave at Gdańsk Żabianka stop, then take a 10-minute walk down the Subisława and Rybacka streets) and ZTM trams (trams no. 2, 8, 6, 11 – leave at Gospody/Osiedle Wejhera stops, then follow the information boards). In order to get to ERGO ARENA straight from the airport, take the PKM train which has its stop at the airport, then change at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz stop and take the SKM train towards Gdańsk Żabianka. For fans, who are choosing to travel by car, we recommend the so-called Green Route which connects the venue with Grunwaldzka street/Niepodległości avenue – the main Gdańsk-Sopot road. Match Report

Poland clinch spot in weekend grand finale

Article

The second and the last quarter-final match at ERGO ARENA in Gdańsk was a tough battle between the reigning World Champions and co-hosts, team Poland, and the Olympic Games’ Silver Medalists, Russia. For the latter, it was the 100th match they had played in tournament’s history, where up to this point they had achieved an impressive 77 victories. In the history of battles against Poland, Russia had won 19 out of the 23 matches at EuroVolley.

The Polish players stepped into the match in a really good way by putting their opponent under considerable service pressure (9-3). The Russians were incapable of stopping Wilfredo Leon in this part and supported by thousands of their enthusiastic fans, Poland just increased their advantage (19-11). Finally the first set got settled by the attack of Bartosz Kurek (25-14).

After the painful loss in the opening set, in the second showed that the Russians really wanted to fight back (7-7), in the key phase of the sets evolution the hosts secured a five-points advantage (19-14), which led them to the triumph in the second set as well, but in the end only by two points.

In the third part Russia was on the edge of finishing their journey in EuroVolley and got off to a bad start trailing (7-3). The players of Tuomas Sammelvuo’s team simply could not find a solution to fight against Poland (15-11), who were completely on fire and raced towards the victory in straight sets (19-14), which finally came true to the delight of the Polish fans (25-19).

Now Poland will move to Katowice and will wait for the winner of the Czech Republic-Slovenia quarter-final match tomorrow, to see who will become their opponent in the Saturday’s semi-final.

"If we play next games like this one we will win this EuroVolley. We played great and I'm very happy about our performance. I know very well these players, because I played with them in Russia. It was a hard game, we played strong and pushed them until the end and now we are waiting for next opponent."

Wilfredo Leon
outside hitter of Poland

"It's difficult to analyse this game, because we played like 50%, I don't know why. It's very difficult to say something after the game when you are losing in straight sets. Poland just played good today."

Egor Kliuka
outside hitter of Russia
