Overview
The defending champion Serbia was dancing on the edge in the eight-finals being 1-2 down in game against Turkey to eventually emerge victorious in tie-break. Also the Netherlands who reached this stage of competition for the first time since 2009 secured a spot after a five-set battle against Portugal. The Netherlands and Serbia locked horns 14 times at EuroVolley and both teams won seven games, however Serbia won the last five encounters.
Head-to-Head
· The Netherlands and Serbia (including Serbia and Montenegro and Yugoslavia) have met 14 times at the European Championships. Both nations won seven matches.
· This century, Serbia (including Serbia and Montenegro) have won all their five European Championship matches against the Netherlands (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013).
· These nations met earlier this year in the 2021 Volleyball Nations League. On 22 June, Serbia won 3-2 (17-15 in final set). Serbia's Drazen Luburic (33) won the most points in that match in which the Netherlands' Nimir Abdel-Aziz did not participate.
· Serbia beat the Netherlands 3-0 at the European Olympic qualifying tournament in January 2020. Both teams failed to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Netherlands
· The Netherlands reached the quarter-finals of EuroVolley 2021 by beating Portugal 3-2 in the Eight Finals. The Netherlands won four of their five group phase matches in this tournament, with the exception a 3-2 loss against Russia.
· The Netherlands are guaranteed to finish in the top eight at a European Championship for the first time since 2009, when they finished in seventh position.
· The last time the Netherlands reached the semi-finals at the European Championships was in 1997. They won the title that year as tournament hosts, after beating Yugoslavia 3-1 in the final in Eindhoven.
· Nimir Abdel-Aziz has won 159 points in the final round of this tournament, most of all players. Earlier this year, Abdel-Aziz finished as tournament top scorer at the 2021 Volleyball Nations League.
Serbia
· Defending champions Serbia progressed to the quarter-finals by beating Turkey 3-2 in the Eight Finals. Serbia won four of their five group phase matches in this tournament, with a 3-2 loss against Poland as the only exception.
· Serbia can become the first team to win consecutive European Championships since Italy in 2003 and 2005.
· Serbia finished in the top four in four of the last five European Championships. In this run, they only failed to reach the semi-finals in 2015, when they were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals (3-1).
· At EuroVolley 2019, Serbia won 3-2 against Ukraine in the quarter-finals.
· Serbia won 15 of their last 16 matches at the European Championships, with this year's 3-2 group stage defeat versus Poland as their only defeat in this span.
· Serbia have won at least one set in each of their last 46 EuroVolley matches, since a 3-0 defeat against Russia in the 2007 semi-finals.
· Uros Kovacevic (92) is Serbia's leading points scorer in this year's final round.

You can easily reach the venue by using public transportation. The two most convenient means include SKM trains which run regularly from all local directions (leave at Gdańsk Żabianka stop, then take a 10-minute walk down the Subisława and Rybacka streets) and ZTM trams (trams no. 2, 8, 6, 11 – leave at Gospody/Osiedle Wejhera stops, then follow the information boards). In order to get to ERGO ARENA straight from the airport, take the PKM train which has its stop at the airport, then change at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz stop and take the SKM train towards Gdańsk Żabianka. For fans, who are choosing to travel by car, we recommend the so-called Green Route which connects the venue with Grunwaldzka street/Niepodległości avenue – the main Gdańsk-Sopot road. Thijs ter Horst is the powerhouse for the Dutch on the outside. After having played three years in Korea for the Daejeon Samsung Bluefangs he returned to Italy where he previously played for Verona. He joined Piacenza and after a year he transferred to Sir Sicoma Perugia in 2020. He played most of the season as opposite and can be used by head coach Piazza on both positions.

Nikola Jovović"I think concentration was the key. We started this game with a good attitude and with a good mindset, because during the last game against Turkey we had some brainstorms during the match and today we just tried to stay focused from the first to last ball. We promised ourselves in the locker room that this would not be our last game at this tournament. It was a good day for us and I really like the way we played and how we stopped Nimir who is a great player."

Wessel Keemink"I think that we started the first set well. We had some balls that we looked a little bit nervous, including myself, but we also had some good points. But we gave away a little bit of balls. The second set we started terribly, then we came back but it was too late. In the third set we played what we could, they also played well and they were a bit better in the end."
