Unbeaten Turkey qualify for the #EuroVolleyW Quarter Final

Article

Turkey didn't let surprises, recorded their sixth win out of six matches at #EuroVolleyW 2021, and made it to the Quarter Finals after defeating Czech Republic 3-1 in front of more than 2000 Turkish fans in Kolodruma Sport Hall, Plovdiv.

⦁ Turkey left no doubts who is the better team on the court in the first set, dominating on all components. 4 team blocks and 2 aces by Tugba Senoglu in addition to the 14 winning spikes made the Czechs powerless. A successful challenge called by Ioannis Athanasopoulos at 23-11 followed by an ace from Eva Svobodova prolonged the set a bit but Turkey eventually opened in their favor.

⦁ Surprisingly, things turned around in the second set with Czech Republic being the steadier team on the court who didn't lose the lead at any moment. With a total of 11 errors made throughout the set, the Turks helped the opponent to tie despite managing to save 6 set-points before that.

⦁ The Czech joy didn't last long as the CEV EuroVolley 2019 runner-up came back even stronger than in the first set. Pushing hard from the service line, Turkey shook up the opponent's reception and exploded on block with 5 stops at the net. 6 points scored by both Senoglu (2 aces) and Hande Baladin got the team from the Balkans closer to their 9th Quarter Final out of their 10 last EuroVolley appearances.

⦁ The fourth set didn't bring any more drama. Turkey dominated the gameplay entirely. 68%, reached on winning spikes and 2 more aces and kill blocks turned the team coached by Giovanni Guidetti into a quarterfinalist.

⦁ Hande Baladin led all the scorers contributing 19 points for the win of Turkey while her teammates Tugba Senoglu and Ebrar Karakurt scored a total of 16 and 15 points respectively. Gabriela Orvosova was the top performer for Czechia finishing with 10 points.

“We like to come back. When the team loses a set we always stick together. We pushed each other knowing the importance of this match. Losing it meant we are out of the tournament but we won. Turkish fans are always amazing. Whenever we go they are always with us. This victory is for them.”

Ebrar Karakurt
Outside spiker, Turkey

“Turkey served great today. We struggled with the reception and we couldn’t organize our attack well. We are satisfied with our play in the tournament. We won sets against Poland, Germany, Turkey. Reaching the Eighth Finals is a good result but now we want more.”

Gabriela Orvosova
