Overview

The hosts of the EuroVolley Pool C, Croatia have a perfect record at the halfway through the preliminary stage. Three straight-set wins gave Croatia a leader position and they hope to improve further their winning streak in the match against Hungary. Croatia impresses with the strength of their attack as captain Samanta Fabris can count on a solid support from Lucija Mlinar, Laura Milos and middle blocker Bozana Butigan. On the other side of the net, Hungary will try to cause a surprise, they lost their game against Italy on Sunday and after winning their first match against Slovakia, and suffering a defeat in tie-break from Switzerland they will be seeking their chances in every match. Team captain Greta Szakmary proved how powerful spiker she is already in the previous games, but the question is if it can be enough to stop Croatia.

Match Report

Croatia keep perfect record against gutsy Hungary

Article 24 August 2021

Sometimes a warm up can give you an idea as to how a match will develop. With Hungary and Croatia, the warm up intensity was quite low and the match started without much concentration on both sides. Both teams made many mistakes, and they had many ace serves and very little points from their attacks.

Croatia won the first set 25-19, though the game was pretty even until 17-17. Croatia had five ace serves, but also six mistakes in this same compartment and nine points that they gave away (by their own mistakes) to Hungary as a gift. Luckily, their reception rate stood at an impressive 72%.

However, when Hungary’s head coach Jakub Gluszak made a change and instead of their team captain Gréta Szakmary sent Kata Török in, Hungary picked themselves up and shortly afterwards they took the lead. Croatia managed the tie at 16-16, by scoring five points in a row, and it seemed they would overtake the lead and they would decide the set in their favour, but Hungary responded well and won the set 25-21.

Croatia dominated the third set to win it by 25-17. Coach Daniele Santarelli trusted the team and made no changes to the starting six and the girls justified his trust in the end.

In the last, fourth set, Croatia took the lead at 15-12, Hungarian coach Gluszak called a time-out, but gained nothing by it, so he called one more at 19-13. The Croatian girls were impossible to stop though on their way to a 4th consecutive victory to keep first place in Pool C.

“It is another victory and another three points and we are obviously happy with this, but that was for sure not our best Volleyball. We – as much as Hungary – made too many mistakes, especially in the first set. Tomorrow we will be playing against Italy; we know the quality of their team and we are aware that they stand a level higher than us and all of the other teams here, but tomorrow is a new day and a new game!”

Samanta Fabris
Captain of Croatia

“I think that what made the difference was that we had some long periods when we kept making mistakes and we could not come out of it fast. In my opinion, it was decisive. Croatia also did not play flawlessly, and they committed mistakes too, but it was not for as long as we did. When we made all these mistakes, they went ahead by five or six points, leaving us behind. We have to fix it for tomorrow. We still have a game to play and we still have a chance to go to the next round.”
