Match Report

Turkey stand Finnish comeback to record second win

Article

Finland were close to causing a sensation and they eventually walked away with one point while Turkey improved their win-loss record to two victories in as many matches in Pool A. Finland were actually close to taking the first set as well, where they failed to capitalise on one set ball.

The rising star of Turkish Volleyball, 19-year-old Ebrar Karakurt, registered 26 points but Seyma Ercan, who joined the game only late in the fourth set, was highly instrumental towards Turkey’s victory as she scored five times in the tiebreak – to finish the game on nine points.

Even though they stood out with their blocking game (13 stuffs), the Finns failed to record a single block in the tiebreak.

Interestingly enough, when Finland made their last EuroVolley appearance back in 1989 in West Germany, they lost to Turkey 1-3 in the pool phase.

Day 2 Recap

Play

Meliha İsmailoğlu, outside spiker of Turkey: “Today’s game did not unfold in the way we expected. Firstly, I want to congratulate our opponent because they showed some incredible defence actions and they pushed us very hard with the serve. We went into the game taking it seriously but we lost our concentration after the second set. We will review tomorrow what all happened and work on our weaknesses. After a short break, I hope we will come back to the court ready for the Bulgaria game.”

“It was amazing to play like this with Turkey, one of the best teams in the world. We fought well and we came back from behind. It was a close match. The crowd was amazing. Everything was so nice. This match has to be the best game we have ever played together. We trust each other and we know what to do. We just fought so well. Today, we realised that we can play at the same level as some of the top teams. I think we can use this experience for the next match with Greece.”
