Match Report

Titleholders Serbia edge Turkey to claim top spot in Pool A

Article

Serbia secured their fifth straight victory in the competition to claim first place in Pool A.

Turkey caught a very promising start to the match – taking the first set – but could not keep the same pace for the rest of the game, thus settling for second place in the group on a 4-1 win-loss record.

Serbia’s superstar Tijana Boskovic and Brankica Mihajlovic top scored with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Turkey’s team captain Eda Erdem Dündar scored 16 times, including seven blocks.

With the result, Serbia made amends for a 0-3 loss they suffered at the hands of Turkey earlier this year in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League.

There was a record crowd of 10,700 spectators at Ankara Sports Hall – the highest attendance registered at this year’s EuroVolley this far.

Day 7 Recap

Play

“We feel very happy because we know Turkey is a good team and this game was very important. The Turkish fans were extremely passionate and it is good to see a full hall. I am proud of my team. We had some ups and downs, especially in the third and fourth sets but I am happy that after losing a few points, we could come back and that we play as a team. We finally have two days off and we are waiting for our opponent. We will be at the top and give our maximum against Romania.”

Maja Ognjenovic
Captain of Serbia

Giovanni Guidetti, coach of Turkey: “It was a great fight, in front of great people, great spectators. It is amazing to play in front of this crowd. In front of us, there was the best team in the word right now and with the number of mistakes that we did, it is impossible to compete with them.

Starting from now, every match is a final. We have to play much better in the next round to stay in the competition as long as possible. In this round, we did our job, nothing less, nothing more than that.”
