Match Report

Oranje romp to victory over Azerbaijan

Article 25 August 2019

The president of CEV, Mr Aleksandar BORICIC has arrived to Papp László Sportaréna and watched the game between Azerbaijan and The Netherlands from the stands. Jamie MORRISON, head coach of the Dutch team made four changes in starting lineup, this time nominating Robin DE KRUIJF and Lonneke SLÖETJES in the starting six. Once, Giovanni CAPRARA (AZE) started the game without Polina RAHIMOVA who scored 38 points two years ago, when the two teams met in the semi-final of EuroVolley (then the Netherlands won 3-2). In the first set the Netherlands were almost flawless, made only 5 mistakes, winning the opening set easily. In the next part Azerbaijan fought hard, making only one error during the whole set, but in the decisive part the Dutch team outspiked their opponent, mainly thanks to the attacks from Robin DE KRUIJF, who had then 89% of efficiency in this element (80% in the match). The Azerians saved three set points, but the Netherlands closed this set on their favour in front of the loud group of the Dutch fans. In the third set The Netherlands showed powerful blocks and closed the game in 78 minutes. Lonneke SLÖETJES (NED) scored match-high 18 points, Nika DAALDEROP (NED), Anne BUIJS (NED) and Odina ALIYEVA (AZE) had 13 each.

Day 3 Recap

Play

Jamie MORRISON, head coach of the Netherlands:

"Azerbaijan is a good volleyball team so I'm happy with the win, especially happy with the first set. We played how we wanted to, what we talked about last few weeks. We were aggressive, end of the 3rd set we played 'not to lose' and this is not what I want. Hopefully we learn from that and use that on the tournament."

“There are a lot of things to do better, but we controlled the game in many moments. It’s good to feel the joy of the game, but in some moments we let it go. I’m a little bit disappointed that we didn’t keep up the level in the entire match. At the end we won, and 3-0 is always good.”

Lonneke SLÖETJES
outside hitter of the Netherlands

Giovanni CAPRARA, head coach of Azerbaijan:

"We played bad today and against Croatia as well. Against the Netherlands we improved a little bit our game, but we had too many own mistakes: in the third set, during the last point we made four stupid mistakes. We will try to play better against Hungary tomorrow."
