Overview

2017 co-hosts face 2019 co-hosts again after facing each other during the last two EuroVolley tournaments. Hungary won the first match in 2015 but Azerbaijan bounced back two years later. This is the third consecutive EuroVolley appearance for Hungary after reaching 12th and 15th place in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Their best result is a silver medal from 1975. Azerbaijan have finished fourth twice, in 2005 and 2017.

Match Report

Azerbaijan outclass the hosts

Article 26 August 2019

It was a very important game for both teams. Hungary with the support of 2500 fans started the match very well, leading 8-5, however Azerbaijan reduced it very quickly. Anett NÉMETH (HUN) did her best on court scoring 8 points in the first set, but seven mistakes made during this part was too much to take this part, especially that Polina RAHIMOVA (AZE) showed her power in attack. In the second set Jan De BRANDT (HUN) made several changes in the line-up but Azerbaijan kept the momentum and spread their wings in all elements, serving 5 aces. In the third set Hungary were 5 points behind, but with impressive serves from Zsófia GYIMES and attacks from Rita BOKORNÉ LILIOM gave them even two-point lead, but after several errors in the reception Azerbaijan managed to close this game in three sets. RAHIMOVA was the best scorer of the match with 22 points. The president of Hungarian Olympic Committee, Mr Krisztián Kulcsár and the CEV President Aleksandar Boricic were present at Papp László Sportaréna in Budapest.

"I'm really proud of my players, because today they made one more step to achieve our goal. We did a great job tonight, especially in reception and service. In the third set, the game became more difficult, but we were able to focus on our play, without losing our mind. Day by day we try to improve, I hope that we will follow this way."

Giovanni CAPRARA
head coach of Azerbaijan

Polina RAHIMOVA, opposite of Azerbaijan:

"There are no easy wins at this level of volleyball. In the second set, we made too many mistakes, but we could correct them later on. We respect all teams, so we will try to do our best against Romania and Estonia."

"I'm very sad. This game didn't go like we planned. We made mistakes at crucial points and we were not able to finish our attacks."

Gréta SZAKMÁRY
outside spiker of Hungary

Jan De Brandt, head coach of Hungary:

"I'm not disappointed. We lost against a very strong team. Azerbaijan played better in every element, but in my opinion we also showed good volleyball."
